About UN Environment Programme

Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global
authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the
environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an
authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the

environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve

their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

UNEP works on delivering transformational change for people and nature by drilling down on the root

causes of the three planetary crises of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and

waste. UNEP employs seven interlinked subprogrammes for action: Climate Action, Chemicals and

Pollutions Action, Nature Action, Science Policy, Environmental Governance, Finance and Economic

Transformations and Digital Transformations.

Through its campaigns, particularly World Environment Day, UNEP raises awareness and advocates

for effective environmental action.

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and

out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence.

UNEP works closely with its 193 Member States and representatives from civil society, businesses, and

other major groups and stakeholders to address environmental challenges through the UN Environment

Assembly, the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment.

The Executive Director and Senior Management Team lead the implementation of UNEP’s Medium-

Term Strategy (MTS). The four-year MTS articulates UNEP’s role in delivering the promises of

the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable

Development (Rio+20) as well as its outcome document, “The Future We Want.”

UN environment strategy for environmental

education and training

In this strategy, environment is understood to encompass the natural and built environment,

socioecological and economic aspects of environmental issues, and political dimension of

environmental protection. In this context, environmental education and training includes aspects related

to a wide variety of environment and development issues that affect and are affected by human

activities and natural phenomena.

Recognising that the capacity of human society to address environment and development issues and

risks differs according to context, culture, skills and patterns of environmental change, this strategy

recognises the need for appropriate education and training, skills, technology, infrastructure, access to

resources and information for enhanced environmental management capabilities. As such UN

Environment recognises education as the primary agent for social change towards sustainable

development and as a vital tool for the achievement of UN Environments mandate.

UN Environment's vision for Environmental Education & Training for Sustainable Development

(EETSD) in the next decade is to support the holistic approach to the protection of the environment and

the improvement of people's quality of life by developing and strengthening initiatives which are

responsive, locally relevant, and aimed at transforming people's visions and aspirations into reality for

the present and future generations.

This strategy also considers environmental education as continuous lifelong learning that emphasis the

complexity of environmental issues and calls for the use of different and innovative educational

approaches to teaching and learning. The strategy is also consistent with the environmental education

principles which recognise environmental education as a continuous and lifelong process, based on

interdisciplinary approaches, active participation and individual and group responsibility for the

environment. Working towards sustainable development is the responsibility of every citizen. This

makes environmental education important for everyone. Recognising this diversity, education in this

strategy includes the different educational sectors, namely formal, non-formal and informal. In this

context, education includes public awareness and training as away of including all citizens in the efforts

to assess and address their environmental and developmental problems. This also enables processes of

empowerment of young and old to enhance greater public participation in decision-making processes.

The Challenge:
People around the world should have the
opportunity to develop the knowledge and
skills they need to build a sustainable future.
 Global opportunities for sustainable development goals

1. Green Jobs for Youth Pact (alliance with ILO, UNICEF, UNEP)

The Pact wants to scale up initiatives to equip our youth with the needed tools to develop the skills to

achieve sustainable transformation. The Pact develops partnerships with governments, the private

sector, academia, and youth, to identify the gaps in the skills of youth.

2. Sustainable lifestyles within 1.5 degrees (collaboration with Hot or Cool Institute)

Sustainable lifestyles are about changing our consumption and production patterns, looking at

circularity, and enabling citizens to be more sustainable. We would like to explore the pathways and

necessary infrastructures to achieve a positive, sustainable future.

3. Financing Circularity (collaboration with UNEP FI)

With UNEP FI we analyse the existing financial mechanisms for circularity in Latin America and are

about the start in Africa. The results will be shared with developing banks to put this into practice, with

the aim to upscale circular practices.

4. Sustainable Consumption and Production (collaboration with One Planet Network)

Science partners will work on sustainable consumption and production themes in Latin America and

the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, and Africa. The regions will also receive training on the use of

SCP HAT to identify the hot spots of emission in high-impact sectors.

5. SMEs: Gamechangers for Local Actions towards Sustainability (SEED, GO4SDGs, UNEP) Global

awareness of the triple planetary crisis resulting from unsustainable consumption and production

patterns is growing, as well as the private sector's potential to address them. The event will demonstrate

the potential and necessity to engage with and enable SMEs to deliver sustainability, including the

opportunity to start their journey to net-zero.

“Adriana Zacarias Farah, head of GO4SDGs: "GO4SDGs is

addressing key topics of the regional consultations, which were a
wonderful opportunity to connect with different stakeholders. They
made clear that social Inclusion is key, which refers to new metrics
beyond GDP and to learning from Indigenous Peoples and woman
and equipping our youth with innovative skills to achieve the
sustainable transformation we are dreaming for."
