Simplify molar mass calculations with these organized Cornell notes handout with practice
calculating molar masses. With this freebie, students practice molar mass calculations using an
engaging tarsia puzzle. They’ll match the edges of chemical formulas with their corresponding molar
masses – great as a brain break, homework, or collaborative check during class!

Tips and ideas for tarsia puzzles:

• Print once and use for years. Pieces can be stored in individual baggies for easy use in the future.
• Allow students to work individually or with a partner to complete as a bell ringer, a race, station
work or homework.
• Pass out the template for students to glue their tarsia pieces onto or glue into their notebook.

Differentiated! Two versions are included: Puzzles with & without edges so that you can adjust the
level of challenge for your students.

Summarize main points and ideas behind how to find a compound’s molar mass:
Students' answers will vary here. You could turn this area into an exit slip or a think-pair-share activity and then
make a class list.

Some main points and ideas students might include:

• The molar mass of a compound is the sum of its total elements
• Don’t forget to multiply a subscript through the elements
• Molar mass is found on the periodic table
• It is the mass of one mole of any substance, thus the units g/mol
• It can be used to convert between grams and moles
