CONSTRUCTION
The main parts of the Q - 75 turbine gas meter are:

1. Meter body

2. Measuring mechanism and turbine wheel

3. Inlet flow conditioner

4. Mechanical drive and magnetic coupling to transmit turbine wheel

rotation outside the pressure vessel

5. Mechanical counter for registering the volume measured

6. Oil lubrication system for the turbine wheel shaft bearings

3
OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The flowing gas enters the meter
through a built-in flow conditioner
(1) that conditions the flow profile
and increases the gas velocity. The
gas continues along the flow chan-
nel (2) and enters the turbine
rotor.The turbine rotor blading (3)
is designed with overlap to give com-
plete guidance to the flowing gas
and extract the maximum energy at 4
low gas velocities. The turbine
wheel’s angular velocity is propor-
tional to the average gas velocity
flowing through the meter. The gas
exits the turbine rotor through a
flow ring (4) and an expanding exit
channel to minimize pressure losses.
The rotation of the turbine rotor is
transmitted via a gear train (5) and
transferred from the pressurised
meter body to the counter (7) by a
gas tight magnetic coupling (6). The
follower magnet of the magnetic
coupling drives the counter to regis-
ter volumes measured at the oper-
ating conditions.

MEASURING RANGE
The Q-75 turbine gas meter has a measuring range of 20:1 with air at atmos-
pheric conditions. At higher operating densities, the range of the turbine meter
will increase since more torque is available to overcome mechanical friction of
bearings. The following equation may be used to estimate the minimum flow
rate of the meter for various operating conditions:

p(atm) 1
Q = Qm x
pm d

Q = minimum capacity under operating conditions

Qm = minimum capacity for meter accuracy - see table on page 7

pm = operating pressure of the meter in bar absolute

p(atm) = atmospheric pressure in bara ( 1.01325 bara)

d = relative density of the flowing gas

see table page 10.

The formula is only valid at near ambient temperature and assumes ideal
gas behaviour (Z=1)

METER INDEXES
The turbine meter is fitted with an index counter which can give both a mechanical and various electronic read-
outs. The standard Multi-index has an eight digit mechanical read-out fitted in a white coloured index head. It may be
rotated through 350° for ease of viewing.

Multi-Index Slot Sensor

Mechanical Options:

- An external shaft can be fitted to drive a mechanical volume corrector

- The head can be made air and water tight and can be fitted with a Silicon element to absorb
interior water vapour

Electronic Options:

- The Multi Index head can be fitted with a maximum of three frequency sensors (i.e.)
2x LF & 1x HF, or 2x HF & 1x LF.
- The HF output uses a slot sensor on a disk with 29 segments
- The LF output uses a reed switch with 1,2,5, or 10 impulses per revolution.
The reed switch circuit may either be normally open or closed.
- One or two connectors of the Binder type may be fitted.
Connections may also be made through a
Harting type or through a special Instromet ISM connector box
fitted to the side of the head of the index.
- The connections and the impulse values are stated on the
information
plate located on the index cover.
- The pulse data is included in the table below.

Proximity Switch/Reprox Probe

This high frequency pick-up may be mounted at the turbine rotor

(aluminium rotor only) and/or at a follower disk mounted on
the main shaft. Its pulse data is also given in the table below.

ELECTRONIC VOLUME CORRECTORS

The Q-75 turbine meter totalizes volumes at operating conditions of pressure and temperature. Instromet Volume Cor-
rectors can be used to convert the volume under line conditions to reference conditions (such as 1.0325 bar, 0°C or 14.73
psi, 60 F). Reliability and security are ensured by rigorous design procedures, thorough testing and extensive field ex-
perience. Proven insensitivity to very high levels of electrical interference and excellent accuracy and stability have resul-
ted in approval even by the most critical metrological authorities in Europe.

MODEL 500 MICROSTAR VOLUME CORRECTOR

The 500 series is a range of compact economic electronic volume correctors for
fiscal gas metering to small industrial and commercial users. Also suitable for
accurate in plant gas metering. Models for temperature correction only, pres-
sure correction only and for both pressure and temperature correction are avail-
able. (See brochure 500).

MODEL 510 VOLUME CORRECTOR

An intrinsically safe, compact, low power, battery operated volume corrector.
Meter output is converted to volume at the user’s reference conditions taking
pressure, temperature and compressibility into account. Maximum pressure 10
bar (150 psi) (see brochure 510).

RACK MOUNTED
FLOW COMPUTER
Instromet supplies a range of rack
mounted flow computers with
extensive output and logging facil-
ities and temperature or density
inputs.
Models for up to three streams are
available. Ask your nearest sales of-
fice for more detailed information.
