Introduction
That has brought two more issues to observe. First, you need to be able to
communicate in at least more than one language in an effective way, depending
on your context. Second of all, since institutions need to validate your
competencies, you will be evaluated according to an international framework and
international standards, so that you can obtain an important certificate.
For that reason, UVEG has expanded the possibilities for you to develop more
competitive skills. The objective of the course is to facilitate the linguistic elements
for you to be able to exchange information and communicate appropriately with
regard to those situations related to your life, such as personal information, routine,
current experiences and projects.
In order to achieve that, you will be provided with the necessary information, as well
as the gradual practice to develop your language skills through your UVEG platform
and your pdf booklet with printable worksheets. In addition, you will be given a
wealth of online resources, vocabulary lists, learning tips and strategies to empower
your self-learning process.
This course consists of 6 lessons that will be evaluated for you to get the credit for the
course. Such evaluation will be through a quiz.

Activity
Welcome to our campus!
We are very glad to have you here for this year’s Summer exchange program. This
year, we are celebrating the 10th edition of this cross-cultural experience with
students from all over the world, and every year the experience gets better.
In order to guarantee a pleasant experience, there are a few do’s and don'ts when
touring around the city.
Bring an ID at all times, but don’t carry your passports with you.
If you go sightseeing, keep your personal belongings with you at all times. Do not
leave them unattended. Don’t walk on the street late at night. If you are not sure
as to where to go, contact us through the WhatsApp group chat and ask for
directions.
Do not smoke in public areas and do not drink on the streets, since you face the risk
of being arrested.
When socializing with people, say “please” and “thank you”. People like it very
much, specially the elderly. When you want to use the restroom in a family house,
ask for permission from the head of the family. Be mindful about food. If there is
something you don’t feel comfortable ingesting, don’t eat or drink it.
6
Bienvenidos y bienvenidas a nuestro campus. Estamos muy contentos de tenerles
aquí para nuestro programa anual de intercambio de verano. Nos encontramos
ahora celebrando la décima edición de esta experiencia intercultural, con
estudiantes de todo el mundo, y cada año la experiencia mejora.
Traigan sus identificaciones en todo momento, pero no carguen sus pasaportes con
ustedes.
Grammar Presentation
First of all, it is important to mention something peculiar about imperatives, or
commands. In the English language, contrary from Spanish, in order to produce a
complete idea or a sentence, you need at least two elements: A subject (what/who
you are talking about), and a verb (action or state) For example:
Subj. Verb
I work.
This is an example of a complete idea. It has a subject and a verb. The following is
an example of an incomplete idea.
Verb+s place time
Works in a bank long hours.
7
JUEGO, JUEGAS, JUGAMOS
This doesn’t happen in English. For this reason, it is always necessary to mention the
subject, in order to know who or what we are talking about. Having considered all
this, we can mention that commands or imperatives, are the only structures in
English, that don’t use a subject.
For instance:
If you say this to someone:
“Work in a bank long hours” the message you are sending is “I am telling you to work
in a bank”, sort of speak.
8
“Work in a bank long hours”, el mensaje que le estas enviando a la persona es “te
estoy diciendo que te pongas a trabajar en un banco hasta tarde”, por decirlo de
alguna manera.

Lesson 2
Hello again!
Welcome to Module 13, Lesson 2, where
we will learn some interesting aspects of
the English Language. You might have
heard about “Countable and
Uncountable nouns” by now.
A noun, in simple words is the name of
someone or something, common or
proper.
• Julio = name = noun (proper)
• Professor = name = noun (common)
• Table = name = noun (common)
Bienvenido Bienvenida al Módulo 13
Lección 2, donde aprenderemos algunos
aspectos interesantes acerca del idioma
inglés. Probablemente ya has escuchado
acerca de los sustantivos contables e
incontables.
Un sustantivo es, en palabras simples, un nombre de algo o alguien, ya sea común
o propio
Julio = nombre = sustantivo propio
Profesor = nombre = sustantivo común
Mesa = nombre = sustantivo (común)
11
• 2 moneys
En inglés algunos sustantivos pueden ser contados, por ejemplo, un carro, dos carros
eso se les llama sustantivos contables.
Algo diferente sería imaginar agua en botellas. En ese caso, si se pueden contar las
botellas de agua, pero no el agua.
Un sustantivo engañoso con su uso es “dinero”. Toda la gente dice que, si se puede
contar el dinero, pero no siempre. Puedes contar dólares, pesos, billetes, monedas,
pero nunca decimos:
• 1 dinero
• 2 dineros
As you can see in the chart below, we use different quantity words depending on
the type of nouns we are using.
Countable Uncountable
a car a traffic
few cars little traffic
some cars some traffic
many cars much traffic
not many cars not much traffic
How many cars…? How much traffic…?
a lot of cars a lot of traffic
Are there any cars? Is there any traffic?
There aren’t any cars (zero cars). There isn’t any traffic (zero traffic).
12
In this Lesson we learned:
• Mass or Count Nouns
• A, Some or Nothing
• Little or Few
• Any or Some
• How much or How many

Lesson 3
Hello everyone!
Welcome to Lesson 3. How have you been doing
so far? Remember the best way to improve your
skills is staying in touch with the English language.
I trust you have been walking the extra mile. In this
lesson, we will learn how to emphasize those
situations which are part of our routine, and those
which are relatively permanent, as well as
general, personal information about ourselves.
Hola a todas y a todos. Bienvenidas y bienvenidos
a la Lección 3. ¿Cómo les va hasta este
momento? recuerden que la mejor manera de
mejorar sus habilidades es mantenerse en
contacto con el inglés. Espero que hayan estado
dando el su mejor esfuerzo. En esta lección,
vamos a aprender cómo podemos enfatizar esas
situaciones que son parte de nuestra rutina y aquellas que son relativamente
permanentes, así como información general y personal acerca de nosotros y
nosotras mismas.
Let us begin…
We use the simple present tense to talk about facts, and situations that are general
truths, like:
• Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
Or facts:
• They have two children.
• She has a car
We also use the simple present tense to talk about habits or routine, activities that
are repeated periodically; maybe twice a day, three times a month, once a year,
or even once every four years. If it’s repeated from time to time, it’s expressed with
the simple present tense.
• I brush my teeth three times a day.
• We celebrate Christmas once a year.
• February has 29 days every four years.
Utilizamos el presente simple para hablar acerca de hechos, situaciones que son
verdades generales, tales como
14
Situaciones permanentes; aquellas en las que no sabemos cuándo van a cambiar.
• Yo vivo en León
• A ella no le gusta la pizza
O hechos.
• Ellos/ Ellas tienen dos niños/ niñas
• Ella no tiene auto
Vocabulary Lesson 3

• Normally
• Often
• Sometimes
• Rarely, seldom
• Hardly ever
• Almost never
• Never
15
Grammar
Habits are actions that are repeated, with maximum (100%) to minimum frequency
(0%). In order to express such frequency of an action, we can use words called
“frequency adverbs”, and they go from 0% to 100% frequency.
Cómo mencionábamos, los hábitos son acciones que son repetidas con un máximo
de frecuencia (100%) hasta un mínimo (0%). Para poder expresar tal frecuencia de
una acción, tenemos los llamados “Adverbios de Frecuencia”, y van del 0 al 100%
de frecuencia.
Some frequency adverbs like always, usually, normally, and often can be used in
the interrogative and negative forms too.
• Do you always get up early?
• I don’t always get up early.
• Does she usually work on Sundays?
• She doesn’t usually work on Sundays.
• Do they normally cook at home?
• No, they don’t regularly cook at home.

Grammar
In English, there are some common verbs to express our general preference. For
example:
• like
26
• love
• prefer
Remember that when you are expressing situations that are general truths the
conjugation of the verb changes with 3rd persons, HE, SHE, IT.
• He likes dancing or he likes to dance.
• She prefers singing, or she prefers to sing.
• It (the dog) loves playing, or It loves to play.
Recuerda que cuando estás expresando situaciones que son verdades en general,
la conjugación de los verbos cambia con las terceras personas, él, ella, eso, esa.
• Le gusta bailar
• Ella prefiere cantar
• Le encanta jugar.
In contrast, we can use the same verbs to express our preference, but in specific
situations, using the auxiliary “would” which in Spanish would give the ending “...ría”.
For example, if you say:
• “I would love to dance” that would be translated as “me encantaría bailar”.
Now, or in the future, not in general, but a specific situation.
It is important to notice that when we use the auxiliary “would”, the conjugation of
the verb stays the same with all pronouns.
For example:
• I would like to sing.
• She would like to sing.
En cambio, podemos usar los mismos verbos para expresar nuestras preferencias,
pero en situaciones específicas, usando el auxiliar would, el cual en español le daría
la terminación “...ría” a los verbos. Por ejemplo, si dices:
• Me encantaría bailar, ello sería traducido como... ahora, o en el futuro, no
en general, sino una situación específica.
27
• Le encantaría cantar.

back and review previous materials. Think how
everything integrates to enrich your possibilities of
communication. Every hour you spend working on
your English, is one hour you get closer to
approaching your goal. In this final lesson, we will
learn what the correct form of some verbs should be
when it goes together with another verb. Here we
will focus on the first group. Verbs followed by
gerunds. Let us get started with the last lesson in this
module.
Hola. Qué bueno que estés hasta aquí Lección 6. Tómate un minuto para pensar
acerca de todo lo que has aprendido hasta ahora. Recuerda regresar a revisar
material previo y piensa cómo se integra todo lo que has aprendido, para
enriquecer tus posibilidades de comunicación. Cada hora que pasas trabajando
en tu inglés, es una hora que te aproximas a tu objetivo. En esta lección final del
módulo 13 aprenderemos cuál es la forma correcta en la que algunos verbos
deberían de estar cuando van juntos con otro verbo. Aquí nos enfocaremos en el
primer grupo, verbos seguidos por gerundios. Comencemos con la última lección
de este módulo.
It is common to have two verbs together in a sentence, however, only one can be
the main verb and the other one has to have a specific form: Infinitive or Gerund,
principally.
Es común tener dos verbos juntos en una oración, sin embargo, sólo uno puede ser
el verbo principal y el otro tiene que tomar una forma específica: Infinitivo o
gerundio, principalmente.
VERB + ING
For example, it is correct to say:
• I like to do exercise.
• He likes to do exercise.
or
• I like doing exercise.
• He likes doing exercise.
The principal verb goes according to the time and the person, and the second verb
takes the infinitive (to + verb) or the gerund (verb + ing) form. This happens only with
some verbs. Like, hate, love, prefer, are some of them.
29
It is correct to say:
• I enjoy doing exercise.
but it is not correct to say
• I enjoy to do exercise
Some verbs or expressions like enjoy, look forward to, can’t stand, can only be
followed by a gerund (verb + ing).
Algunos verbos o expresiones como enjoy, look forward to, can’t stand, can sólo
pueden ser seguidos por un gerundio.
Algunos verbos sólo pueden ser seguidos por infinitivos, por ejemplo, offer, need,
expect, promise, etc.
Vocabulary Lesson 6
In this Lesson, we will focus on the group of verbs followed by gerunds.
En esta lección nos enfocaremos en grupo, verbos seguidos por gerundios.

Reading
Read the text and identify the words and expressions from the vocabulary list. (only
one phrase from the list is not mentioned)
Lee el texto de nuevo y subraya las palabras o expresiones que escuches de la lista
de vocabulario. (Sólo una frase de la lista no es mencionada)
When it comes to free time, I am not a very dynamic person. I normally avoid
jogging, bike riding or any other type of physical activity. I actually prefer
reading over a cup of coffee. My brother is more the athletic type. He really
enjoys swimming. It is really evident that he can’t stand staying in front of an
electronic device. He can’t help playing video games for a few minutes,
though. I find interesting that he doesn’t mind shopping for groceries, but he
normally postpones doing his school assignments. I always keep pushing him
to do his homework. He also dislikes dancing, which is something I am always
looking forward to doing. Sometimes, when he practices playing his piano, I
love listening to his music. We are very different, but whenever we meet in our
free time, we never quit chatting. We seem to have so many things to talk
about, that once we begin talking, we go on and on.
