1 Parabolic Trough Systems

Parabolic trough systems use curved, reflective surfaces to concentrate sunlight
onto a receiver tube placed along the focal line of the parabolic shape. Heat
transfer fluid circulates through the receiver tube, absorbing the concentrated
sunlight’s heat to generate steam and produce electricity.

2 Solar Power Towers

Solar power towers consist of a field of mirrors (heliostats) that track the sun
and reflect sunlight onto a central receiver located atop a tower. The receiver
absorbs the concentrated sunlight’s heat to generate steam and drive a turbine
for electricity generation.

3 Dish Systems
Dish systems use parabolic dish reflectors to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver
located at the dish’s focal point. The receiver may contain a Stirling engine,
which converts the concentrated solar heat into mechanical energy to drive a
generator for electricity production.

4 Comparison
Each type of CSP system has its advantages and limitations. Parabolic trough
systems are well-established and offer relatively high efficiency, while solar power
towers have the potential for higher temperatures and storage capabilities. Dish
systems are typically smaller-scale but offer versatility and modularity.

5 Future Developments
Ongoing research aims to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scala-
bility of all types of CSP systems. Innovations in materials, design, and storage

technologies are expected to drive further advancements in the field of concen-
trated solar power.
