Adventure 3: Lesson 1: Spiritual Spotlight: Saint Brigid of Ireland Adventure

3

Religious
Spotlight:
Saint Brigid

Saint Brigid was born around the year 453 in Ireland to her slave mother, and
chieftain father. There isn't much that is known about her early life, but
tradition says that she and her mother knew Saint Patrick and that he may
have baptized them.

Her generosity was very strong, as she would often give away her fathers
possessions and food to people in need, because of her strong faith in God. This
made her father upset, so much so that he went to the King of Ireland to
complain about it all, as well as to sell her. The king however, saw her
goodness and ordered that she be freed!

Because of her desire to serve others it was her goal to not marry like other
girls her age, but to become a nun. She then became a leader of
the monastery in Kildare, which was a center of faith and learning, called the
Church of the Oak. It was there that Brigid started an art school where
people learned metal work and how to illustrate scripture with beautiful
pictures. There are many stories about Saint Brigid, and we will learn about
them through hands-on art projects, copy-work, children's books and learn to
make butter like she did, and so much more!
