Concept of Addition

Learning Targets:
• illustrates addition as “putting together or combining or joining sets
• visualizes and adds two one-digit numbers with sums up to 18

 Addition is joining group of objects together.

 The numbers that we add are called addends.
 The answer in addition is called sum.
 + is the symbol used in addition.

Addition Using Number Bonds

We write: 4 + 3 = 7 or + 3

We say: The sum of 4 and 3 is 7, or 4 added to 3 is 7, or 4 plus 3 equals 7.

Addition by Counting On
Add 3 and 4.
Start from 3, you move or
count 4 more steps forward.
You stop at number 7.
Therefore, the answer is 7.

Adding Numbers without Regrouping

Jedd asked John, “What is the sum of 6, 4, and 7?”
To find the sum of 6, 4, and 7, you can group them to find the sum easily.
Add 6 and 4 first, then add 7.
6 after adding the 6 and 4,
6 + 4+7= + 4
10 add the sum (10) to 7.

SUBTRACTION
 The number from which we subtract is called minuend.
 The number that we subtract is called subtrahend.
 The answer in subtraction is called difference.
 The sign “-” stands for subtraction. It is read as minus.

Let’s have this example:

• There are 5 birds in a branch.
2 birds flew away. How many
birds are left in the branch?

• We can find the difference by subtracting 2 from 5.

We write:
5 5 is called the minuend.
- 2 2 is called the subtrahend.
3 3 is called the difference.
Another example: 9 – 2 = ______

Therefore, 9 minus 2 is equal to 7. XX

Subtraction by Counting Backwards

• Subtract 3 from 7.
• We start at 7, then count 3 steps backward.

Subtraction of Whole Numbers

Learning Targets:
 visualizes, represents, and subtracts the following numbers:
a. one- to two-digit numbers with minuends up to 99 without regrouping
b. one- to two-digit numbers with minuends up to 99 with regrouping

Subtracting 1 – to 2 – digit numbers without regrouping

• When we subtract 1- to 2-digit numbers without regrouping, we have to

follow the steps:
1.) Align the numbers vertically following their place value.
2.) Subtract the ones.
3.) Then, subtract the tens.
Example:
Paolo has 54 stickers. He gave his little brother 13

Solution:
To find how many stickers are left Subtract the digits on the tens place
with Paolo, we need to subtract 13
