Additional Information about Life in Shijiazhuang

Pronunciation of Shijiazhuang: sher-(j-ah)-(j-wong)

The city
Shijiazhuang is the capital of Hebei Province. Hebei is the province that surrounds
Beijing. We are only about 275 km southwest of the Beijing which is about a 1.5 hour
train ride on the bullet trains (G Train). This city has an airport that does go to some
international (Asian) places. You can connect through Shanghai to arrive in our city via
plane or you can arrive in the Beijing Capital Airport which is the 10 th best airport in the
world (according to Sky Trax World Airport Awards, 2015) and is the second busiest in
the world.

As a capital city, it’s more of a business city than a tourist attraction. It is a great place
to learn Chinese and the locals are all quite friendly. Even people with only a few words
to their English vocabulary will try to help you if you have a problem. English in China
is compulsory so all students have some level of proficiency. The surrounding area has
some places of note to visit or you can hop on a train to anywhere in the country as this
city is the country’s transportation hub.

Wikipedia will tell you that this city is the most polluted city in the world; this is FALSE.
I will not lie to you, weeks/months around Chinese New Year are bad for air quality as
Chinese factories increase shifts and production to account for the week to month-long
holiday their workforce will enjoy. However, the city continues to get better and there
are more blue sky days now than “gray, foggy” ones. The government continues to crack
down on polluters. It is not something that can be changed overnight but it is changing.

Shijiazhuang is a great place to live, especially if you like shopping. There are loads of street
markets, indoor markets and malls. Plus you can buy things online for delivery as well as the
commencement of phone apps that allow restaurants to have food delivered to your door!
Negotiating and bargaining is a way of life, even for buying fruit from the local street vendor
so learning your Chinese numbers and food names goes a long way in helping your quality
of life. Public buses run from about 6 am – 11 pm (route dependent) and the city is currently
building a metro system. Bus fare is $0.17 or $0.35 depending on if the bus has (and is
using) air conditioning/ heat. Bus rides to the nearby ancient town of ZhengDing is $0.35
and about a half hour long. Most supermarkets have a foreign section or you can head to
Beijing to load up on cheese and other goodies. Taxis are cheap, starting at $1.30 for a ride.
A ride to school, should you need it, is just under $2 each way. The school’s shuttle bus is
free for us though or you can buy a bike, e-bike or Vespa knockoff. A bike can set you back
about $25-35, an e-bike about $300 or a Vespa knockoff for about $350.
