CALIPER tool.
FIX JAW-
Use for taking external measurement and other for taking
internal measurement.
MOVABLE JAW-
Use for external measurement.
BEAM-
The Vernier side and the depth bar attached to it side over the
beam. The graduation on the beam are called the main scale
division.
DEPTH BAR-
The depth bar is attached to Vernier side and it is used for
measurement of depth.
THUMB LEAVER-
The thumb leaver is spring loaded on the beam scale.
VERNIER SCALE-
The main scale graduations or divisions mark on the beam.
MAIN SCALE-
The main scale graduations or divisions are marked on the beam.
SIZE-
Vernier caliper are available in 150mm,200mm,250mm,300mm
and 600 mm.
lll. APPLICATION-
SUMMARY- Explain the principle, parts, least count & reading of Vernier caliper in shortly.
ASSIGNMENT:
1. Determine least count for a Vernier caliper which has 9 main scale divisions coinciding with 10 Vernier scale
divisions?
2. Explain briefly parts of Vernier caliper?

PARTS OF
OUTSIDE
MICROMETER FRAME-
The frame is made up of drop forged steel or malleable cast iron.
All other parts of the micrometer are attached to this.
BARREL/SLEEVE-
The barrel or sleeves is fixed to the frame. The datum line and
graduations are marked on this.
THIMBLE-
On the barreled surface of the thimble also the graduation is
marked. The spindle is attached to this.
SPINDLE-
One end the spindle is the measuring face. The other end is
threaded mechanism allows for the forward and backward
movement of the spindle.
ANVIL-
The anvil is on the measuring face which is fitted on the
micrometer frame. It is made up of alloy steel and finished to a
perfectly flat surface.
RATCHET STOP-
The ratchet stop ensures a uniform pressure between measuring
surfaces
lll. APPLICATION-
SUMMARY- Explain the principle, parts, least count &graduations of outside micrometer.
lV. ASSIGNMENT:
Determine least count for a micrometer which has main scale division.

single point Cutting tools is a tool which is used to remove material from work piece telling the
cutting too to obtain desired shape it is made of various materials, shapes and purpose of
angles. learning
1. Front clearance angle 6° to 10° with example
Purpose – Avoid rubbing action between cutting tool and work piece
2. Side clearance angle up to 6°
Purpose – Free feeding of cutting tool and to prevent tool from rubbing
action.
3. Side rake angle 12° to 14°.
Purpose – Controls chip flow away from cutting area.
4. Side cutting edge angle ground to 30°
Purpose – More depth of cut can be given
5. End cutting edge angle ground to 30°.
Purpose – cutting edge formation and to transmit heat from cutting
area.
3) Types 6. Top rake angle 2° to 4°.
Purpose - shearing action, to cut off the material
1. Solid tool
2. Inserted tools
4) Care & 3. Brazed tools
maintenance 4. Throw-away type tools
1. Use recommended grinding wheel
2. Use recommended speed and feed
3. Should not held too tight nor over hanged
4. With draw the feed before stopping the machine
5. After use keep the tools in the separate box
