MOVABLE JAW-
Use for external measurement.

INSIDE MEASUREMENT JAW

(VERNIER SCALE)-
Vernier side move over the beam and can be set in any position
by men of a spring-loaded thumb leaver.

BEAM-
The Vernier side and the depth bar attached to it side over the
beam. The graduation on the beam are called the main scale
division.

DEPTH BAR-
The depth bar is attached to Vernier side and it is used for
measurement of depth.
THUMB LEAVER-
The thumb leaver is spring loaded on the beam scale.

VERNIER SCALE-
The main scale graduations or divisions mark on the beam.

MAIN SCALE-
The main scale graduations or divisions are marked on the beam.

SIZE-
Vernier caliper are available in 150mm,200mm,250mm,300mm
and 600 mm.

Vernier caliper are available with different accuracies.

The Vernier principle states that two different scale are

constructed on a single know length of line and the difference
between them is taken for fine measurements.
i.e.
One main scale division
M.S.D = 1MM
One Vernier scale division
V.S.D = 49/50
GRADUATIONS
AND READING LEAST COUNT-

Topics
WORKING The micrometer work on the principle of screw and nut the BORD WORK
PRINCIPLE longitudinal movement of the spindle turning one rotation is
equal to the pitch of screw.
The movement of the pitch or it’s fractions can be accurately
measured on the barrel and thimble.
The graduations are numbered as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25mm.

MODEL

PARTS OF
OUTSIDE
MICROMETER FRAME-
The frame is made up of drop forged steel or malleable cast iron.
All other parts of the micrometer are attached to this.

BARREL/SLEEVE-
The barrel or sleeves is fixed to the frame. The datum line and
graduations are marked on this.

THIMBLE-
On the barreled surface of the thimble also the graduation is
marked. The spindle is attached to this.
SPINDLE-
One end the spindle is the measuring face. The other end is
threaded mechanism allows for the forward and backward
movement of the spindle.
ANVIL-
The anvil is on the measuring face which is fitted on the
micrometer frame. It is made up of alloy steel and finished to a
perfectly flat surface.

SPINDLE LOCK NUT-

The spindle lock nut is used to lock the spindle at a desired
LEAST/GRADUATIONS position.

RATCHET STOP-
The ratchet stop ensures a uniform pressure between measuring
surfaces

In metric micrometer the pitch of the spindle thread is 0.5mm.

Thereby in one rotation of the thimble the spindle advance
by .5mm one barrel a 25mm long datum line is marked. This line
is further graduated to millimeters (i.e. 1mm & .5mm) the
graduations are numbered as 0.5, 10, 15, 20 and 25mm.

Tap drill size A hole is to be drilled before tapping. It
should have sufficient material in the hole for
Tap drill sizes the tap to cut the material.
for For ISO metric thread tap drill size is
ISO metric calculated as
Tap drill size = Major diameter – (2 x depth)
Tap drill sizes Depth of thread = 0.6134 x pitch of thread
for Example: - Calculate tap drill size for M10x1.5
ISO inch Ans:-
For M10 x 1.5
Major diameter = 10 mm Show table for
Pitch of thread = 1.5 mm standard tap drill size
Calculation
Depth of thread = 0.6134 x pitch
= 0.6134 x 1.5
= 0.9201 mm
Tap drill size = M.D. – (2 x depth)
= 10 – (2 x 0.9201)
= 10 – 1.8402
= 8.1598 or 8.2 mm
For ISO inch thread tap drill size is calculated as
Tap drill size = Major diameter – (1 / TPI)
Example: - Calculate tap drill size for 5/8”
Ans:-
For 5/8”
Major diameter (M.D.) = 5/8”
Threads per inch (TPI) = 11
Calculation
Tap drill size = M.D. – (1/11)
= 0.625 – 0.091
= 0.534”
Next drill size is 17/32 (0.531”)
