It was once believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays few people
subscribe to this view point. While many people are fighting the battle to reduce
weight, studies are being conducted concerning they appetite and hoe it is controlled
by both emotional and biochemical factors. Some of the conclusions of these studies
may give insights into how to deal with weight problems. For example, when several
hundred people were asked about their eating habits in times of stress, 44 percent said
they reacted to stressful situations by eating. Further investigations with both humans
and animals indicated that it is not food which relieves tension but rather the act of
chewing.
In another experiment, results showed that certain people have a specific,
biologically induced hungry for carbohydrates. Eating carbohydrates raises the level
of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Enough serotonin produces a sense of
satiation and hunger for carbohydrates subsides.
Exercise has been recommended as an important part of a weight—loss program.
however, it has been found that mild exercises ,such as using stairs instead of the
elevator, is better in the long run than taking on a strenuous program, such as jogging

(b) Look at the following information and graph about pass percentage of the students in the
plus tow examination. Analyse the given data and write a short review of the pass percentage
of the students of not more than 120 words:
About John Higher Secondary school

 This school was started in a village to cater to the needs of the poor people.
 In 2011, many experienced teachers left the school.
 After reviewing the low performance of the students in the plus-two examination, the
infrastructure facilities were improved and teachers were given adequate training to
teach their subjects effectively.
 Besides, the management has started giving special incentives to the teachers who
give cent percent results in the examination.
11. B.)Bar chart

The given bar char gives information about the academic performance and pass percentage of
students in the plus two examinations at John Higher Secondary school. The x axis represents
the years and the y axis represents the pass percentage or academic performance of students.it
is clear from the given chart the school was started in the village in order to cater to the
academic needs of the poor students .As per the chart, the pass percentage of students was
75% which in successive years has gone down to 68%in 2011and 65%in 2012 A steady
decrease is recorded. The reason for the deterioration is attributed to many teachers leaving
the school, poor infrastructure facility, in competent teaches and the likes. It’s quite clear
from the chart that renewed efforts has been taken to improve the pass percentage of students
in the wake of poor show of performance after 2012.on account of the efforts taken to
developed the faculty and the infrastructural facility, the pass percentage has potentially
improved from 65% in2012 to 91% in 2013 and has reached the zenith with 95% in 2014
recording a quantum leap in the performance. It goes without saying from the given chart that
factors like the environment, infrastructure, quality of faculty and above all, monetary
remunerations are the crucial parameters that actually determine the performance of teachers
and students alike in any given environment

(12) (A) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge
industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning
because everything which goes into the dustbin would be made into something useful. Even
the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes provide energy if nothing else.
The new concept of recycling waste is taking shape at the British technological laboratory at
Warren Spring, not for north of London. Today, the laboratory spends four times as much
money in studying recycling as it did five years ago.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly
what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw
materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This
plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber
as well. Methods have been discovered, for example, for removing the link from newsprint so
that the paper can be used again, and for obtaining valuable oils and gases from old motor car
tyres. All these ideas are already being made use of, but what is new is the idea of combining
them on such a large scale in a single plant designed to recycle most types of waste.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the
rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first, it will
pass through sharp metal spikes which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is
usually packed; then it will pass through powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from
the heavy solids; after that crushers and rollers will break up everything that can be broken.
Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the
rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. But in some big
industrial areas, where rubbish has been dumped for so long that there are no holes left to fill
up with rubbish, these new automatic recycling plants may be built sooner. Indeed with the
growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to
build their own recycling plants.
Write a short summary of the given passage in not more than 100 words. (6)
12. A)
The entire passage is about the impotence and the imperative of recycling. The author
expresses his acute sense of environmental concern of finding a viable eco-system to do away
with the waste. According to the author recycling the rubbish is the best method to get rid of
the menace of waste of every kind. the author says that the word “rubbish” will lose its
meaning because everything that is called rubbish and useless will be made useful by the
process of recycling by the process of which even the most dangerous and unpleasant waste
would be utilized in such a way as to provide energy. He further emphasises that a laboratory
for an extensive study on recycling is called the British Technology Laboratory located at
Warren Spring was for the first time, incepted to efficiently manage the waste of the Great
Britain in the last decade and a half.
The new idea of recycling is to find ways and means of synergising all the
hitherto used methods of recycling not only using metals, lead, copper, but also using paper
and rubber in an effort to better waste management. The author advocates the four stages in
the new project for sorting and separating the rubbish are as follows .first, the rubbish is made
to pass through sharp metal spikes which tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is really
packed. The second is passing through powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the
heavy solid. The third is passing the rubbish through magnet to remove the bits of iron and
steel and the fourth is sorting out the rubber and plastics. At the concluding passage, the
author cautions that disposing the rubbish and the residue of recycling is a major cause of
concern. Not only the disposal of the waste is expensive given the sacristy of dumping yard
but also the transporting cost involved in the elimination of the same is increasingly
exorbitant which is why the author feels the big cities will be compelled to build their own
recycling plant

(i) Answer the following questions in not more than three sentences(5*2=10)

1. Why does the writer say that the word ‘rubbish’ will lose its meaning?
2. What is the name of the laboratory for an extensive study on recycling?
3. Which one is considered as the new idea in the latest project?
4. List the four stages in the new project for sorting and separating the
rubbish?
Why does the writer feel that the big cities will be compelled to build their own recycling
plants?
Answers 12. B)
. 1.the author says that the word “rubbish” will lose its meaning because everything that is
called rubbish and useless will be made useful by the process of recycling by the process of

the disposal of the waste is expensive given the sacristy of dumping yard but also the
transporting cost involved in the elimination of the same is increasingly exorbitant which is
why the author feels the big cities will be compelled to build their own recycling plant.

(b) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
Let us now consider a modern case of telepathy. A girl of about ten years of age was walking
along a country lane, reading a book on geometry. Quite suddenly her surroundings seemed
to fade away, and she saw her mother lying apparently dead on the floor of a little- used room
at home, known as the ‘white room’. Near her on the floor was a handkerchief. The child was
so upset by his vision that instead of going straight home she rushed to the doctor’s house and
persuaded him to go home with her. They found the woman lying on the floor of the ‘white
room’ suffering from severe heart attack. Beside her was the handkerchief. The doctor
arrived in time to save her life.
The case is a good one. The story is not that a child of ten would be expected to invent in
crisis. Moreover, it was verified that she did visit the doctor before going home. Quite
possibly, however, the tale was ‘helped’ by the addition of details after the event. The
mention of the handkerchief may have, been added later to make the story sound more
impressive, or it may even have been a distortion of memory. What is most important is that
the child acted on her vision and went straight to the doctor.
Quite recently in the New York Times Magazine a physician tried to discredit the case by
suggesting that the child’s mother may have been a hysteric who frequently imagined she was
having heart attacks, and so there would be nothing very remarkable in the child’s inventing a
vision of her parent suffering from such a seizure. The suggestion does not seem very likely.
Had the woman been subject to such attacks, genuine or imagined, the doctor would surely
have mentioned the fact. Moreover,
Answers 12.B
The passage is all about telepathy and how by means of telepathy patents can
be monitored and diagnosed. Through a series of case studies, the author emphasis how
vision and telepathy can help psychiatrist, doctors diagnose and prognoses mentally
deranged individuals. .the author states that Telepathy is one of the methods of curing
mentally disturbed individuals using psychoanalytical methods .this is the by-product of
modern psychology. According to the writer’s point of view, telepathy, vision which could be
view as the manifestation of a disturbed mind, many a times seem to bear relevance to reality.
For instance, the handkerchief that appeared as an omen in the vision of the little girl,
forecasting the seizure of the lady in the “white room” exactly matched with the reality
check. He further adds that the little girl came to know of her mother’s sickness by means of
telepathy. He alludes that the white room in the passage refers to the place or room where the
mother laid apparently dead due to sudden seizure. The white room also metaphorically
suggests the pale, withered body of the mother at the time of seizure suggesting infirmity and
morbidity as that of a dead body.
The reason given by the physician in “New York Times” magazine to discredit the case was
that the little girl’s mother was suffering from hysteria, a form of mental derangement
because of which she suffered from delusion of having chronic heart attack. The author also
in his recount describes what not telepathy is.

principal.

Principal: why do you want to start employability skills club?

You : many student in our college need employability skills and the club will conduct

You : you are absolutely right sir. We have an idea of incepting that too.

Principal: oh I see. How do you go about that sonny?

You : we are not making the club activity mandatory for all students rather it is meant

You : precisely sir, moreover, such clubs will be a clarion call for the academically poor
students to realise the need to be employable too.

Principal: well said my boy. Besides concentrating on employability club, I strongly

recommend that literary club can also be incepted.

Principal: by way of encouraging activities such as oration, skits, poetry recitation, group
discussion etc., the stage fear of students can be curbed off.

You : you are one hundred percent right sir, such club will certainly boost the confidence
of our student’s sir.

Principal: Furthermore, such club activities will serve a creative platform for our students to
