Course Objectives
This course has been design to provide students with the needed knowledge to analyze and design
flexible and rigid pavement. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
 Recognize the most significant factors for consideration in the design of flexible and rigid
pavements.
 Analyze flexible and rigid pavement systems using various analytical methods.
 Determine pavement design input parameters, including traffic, material properties, failure
criteria and serviceability
 Design flexible pavement systems in accordance with Asphalt Institute and AASHTO design
procedures.
 Design rigid pavements in accordance with PCA, FAA and AASHTO design procedures.
 Understand the basics of the mechanistic-empirical (M-E) design approach.
 Recognize the advantages and limitations of various design approaches and methods.
