TUTORIAL 4 ASSIGNMENT

TANGENCY

Note: All construction lines (to be carried out as thin lines) should be shown clearly.

Q4-1 Draw the title block. Title: TANGECY 10 marks

Q4-2 Describe two circles of radii 25 and 40 mm respectively within a third of diameter 170
mm, such that all three circles touch each other tangentially.

Q4-3 In this question protractor and/or set squares are allowed.
(i) Construct a triangle ABC, such that AB = 60 mm, angle CAB = 45o and angle ACB =
60o
(ii) Then construct a circle, centre O, to pass through the points A,B and C.
(iii) Finally, extend line AC to P such that CP = 50 mm and construct a tangent from point
P to touch the circle on the minor arc of the chord AC.

Q4-4 Figure 4.1 shows a CAM profile.

Draw the profile showing clearly the construction for:
(a) All the tangents to the two arcs;
(b) The points of contact and the centre for the 75 mm radius;
(c) The points of contact and the centre for the 126 mm radius.
25 marks

Q4-5 A and B are two points 100 mm apart.

(i) With centre B, draw a circle of 75 mm diameter.
(ii) From A construct two lines AC and AD which are tangential to the circle, AC = 150
mm.
(iii) From C construct another tangent to the circle to form a triangle ACD
(iv) Measure and state the lengths CD and AD, and the angle CDA.
