Four simple hacks on how to be an ethical consumer

What does it mean to be a conscious shopper?

We, as consumers, are now becoming more conscious about the artisans creating our clothes, the
conditions they are being made under, the quality of the fabric and the environmental impact of our
clothes as well. If you've decided that your relation to fast fashion ends now, and you're looking for
5 direction to get started on your journey of being a conscious consumer, read ahead.

1. Read clothing labels carefully before you buy

The first step to being an ethical shopper calls for you
to be curious. Pay attention to the fine print – read the
text on the tags and labels on the garments. This will
10 provide you with crucial information like where the
product was made, the consistency of the fabrics used,
and how to take care of it. Some brands also started
incorporating the names of the workers who handmade
the products, initiating a dialogue between the
15 consumer and the artisan.

2. Switch to natural fabrics

In your endeavour to become an ethical shopper, it's best to consider switching to eco-friendly
materials that let your skin breathe – organic cotton, soy silk, hemp and linen are some good
examples. You can even opt for vegan fashion that uses no leather, animal skins or animal by-products
20 in the garments.

3. Reuse, reduce, recycle and resort to slow fashion

Being a woke consumer is about understanding that quality reigns over quantity. Shop only when
needed and opt for fashion that's clean and green. Buying vintage fashion or pre-loved clothes is
another smart way of reducing your carbon footprint on the environment.

25 4. Know what happens to your clothes after you dispose of them

The life cycle of a garment does not end with you, the consumer – it ends when the piece is destroyed,
either in a landfill or in an upcycling mill. As far as possible, donate your clothes to charities, people
and brands to prolong longevity and ensure that the clothes don't end up in a landfill.
