T he Art Models Series and our websites were cre-
ated to support those artists, craftspeople and
hobbyists who celebrate the elegance and wonder of
the human figure. We believe figurative art enriches
our lives by helping us to understand ourselves and
the world around us. As a means of communica-
tion art is timeless, expressing our civilizations not
only for people today, but also far into the future.
Through the Art Models Series we hope to help ad-
vance the creation and acceptance of figurative art by
encouraging artists to practice and to produce mean-
ingful work even when a live model is not available.
Art Models 3 is particularly special in this regard.
Rather than the authors choosing what would go in
the book, we asked our readers and website visitors
to choose the poses they considered most useful from
our entire collection. The result is 56 sets showcasing
a wide variety of interests and frequently requested
features.
• Higher contrast lighting allows you to see how
shadows move across the form as the figure is ro-
tated through the light.
• Carolyne, who was six months pregnant when
she posed, provides a frequently requested glimpse
into an important aspect of human life.
• Other features include two models interacting (see
JesseShandra006), dynamic poses (like Jesse019 &
Susan323), everyday poses (Carolyne004L) and clas-
sical poses (such as Mandy301 based on Bernini’s
“Ecstasy of Saint Theresa”).
No other pose book we know of offers you all these
choices, or gives readers the opportunity to partici-
pate in the content and design like the Art Model’s
series does.
Goals
We want to show you, as well as we can in a book,
what you would see if you were standing in the stu-

dio with the models. To do this we made some de-
sign choices:
• Make the photos as large as possible. This led to
some layouts that are a little awkward, with overlap-
ping photos. However, it allowed for the largest
possible views of the models.
• Include as little text as possible. Less text means
more room for photos. We also include fewer blank
pages, use smaller chapter headings and forego some
other traditional book elements in order to fit more
photos in a 128-page book. Fewer pages results in
the book being in an affordable price range.
• Print the primary four views in n the
book. A book is considerably more
portable than carrying around a
computer (at least for now) so we
wanted the book to be able to stand
tand
alone without the Companion Disk.
That led us to include the four
primary views—front, back, leftt
and right—of each pose. For
3D work, all four views are es-
sential. For 2D work, having
four views lets you choose
the angle that works best for
your composition.
Another goal was making poses
easy to find. We organized them
from high to low, so the book
starts with standing poses and
progress to reclining poses at
the end. We increased the size of
the visual table of contents for
a better view at glance and the
index acts as a quick reference by
model name.

 Companion Disk
While the book shows 4 photos for each pose, the
disk has 24 photos for each pose, creating a full rota-
tion. The Companion Disk also has material that
simply did not fit in the book. For example, some
poses are shown from alternate angles such as over-
head looking down. There are over 1600 photos on
the Companion Disk.
Companion Disk Instructions
There are no programs to install to use the disk, all
the photos are provided in the very common and
widely compatible JPEG format, ready for use with
any photo viewing program. On most computers,
you can simply double click to see a photo.
The 24 views are numbered from 01-24, creating a
continual rotation when viewed in order.

The Companion Disk symbol next to text in the
book indicates the name of the pose on disk. To find a
pose, just look for the folder with the matching name.
Basic steps for viewing the photos
1. Put the Companion Disk in your disk drive.
2. Browse to the drive as you would any data
disk.
3. Open the folder containing the pose you
want to see.
4. Open any photo by double-clicking it.
