WE AGREE FURTHERMORE THAT, good mentoring practice includes the following:

 Guiding the student in selecting and planning an original research topic that can be completed
within the expected time frame of the course offering/subject in a semester.

 Establishing with the student-researcher/s a realistic timetable for completing various study
phases.

 Being accessible to give advice and provide feedback, while also establishing a realistic
timeline for receiving feedback for the student. Feedback should be professional and constructive and
provide concrete guidance for improvement.

 Ensuring that students understand the relevant theories and the methodological and technical
skills necessary for the research, including providing information through an ethical review process
where applicable.

 Avoiding personal or business relationships that may constitute a conflict of interest.

 Communicating promptly if the student’s compliance with agreed outputs as scheduled is no

longer in the research timeline.

 Providing guidance for what actions need to be taken and a timeline for doing so. While
dealing with inadequate compliance or non-compliance can be difficult, it is in no one’s best interest to
continue the research project/study.

 Serving as an advocate for the student.
