The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: The “Hyding” Truth behind the

Mask

The famous American critic and Marxist political theorist Fredric Jameson emphasizes

the idea of “always historicize” in his political research and analysis about Marxism,

postmodernism and the other areas which he interests. By considering Jameson, when we

think about the impacts of history and the incidents which happened in time, it is presumably

easy to make a connection between the period and the literary works .In short, most of the

readers know that nearly all literary works such as novels reflect the background of societies

in which they are written.

The most distinctive characteristic of novels is its relevance with the specific space

and time dimension which differentiate them from the other works like romance, epic and

prepare the reader in what way the writer puts their characters in a particular time. In

approaching the works from the historical aspect, Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll

and Mr. Hyde is considered an imaginative Gothic story which focuses on the supernatural

concerns and the division between good and evil (the duality of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde)

which makes the reader to realize the moral concerns like a fable.

As these given characteristics of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are not

enough to deal with the history side of novel, it should be discussed in a more time and space

dimension to comprehend the purpose of Stevenson which he intends to yield insights to

certain aspects of late Victorian society. That is why Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll

and Mr. Hyde should be regarded as a social critique who enables us to attain vision toward

the values of 19th century Late Victorian and the nature of human with its theme of duality of

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

In respect of dualism, the hypotheses which are anticipated by the leading figures

about human psyche and the body make us aware in order to get the claim of human nature in

Late Victorian society. First of all, Dr. Jekyll is a scientist who has a theory about human

mind consists of two parts; the good and evil which mean that people are not stereotypes of

either good or bad. The doubling present of Dr. Jekyll which he creates in his own laboratory

reveals influences of Charles Darwin’s hypothesis about origin of species. While Dr. Jekyll is

a respectable, sophisticated, and civilized doctor who is respected by all of the citizens, his

double self Mr. Hyde is a primitive man who is opposed to society, inhuman, and has evil

deeds for the people around him.

As Darwin holds the opinion that human beings evolve from more simpler organisms

over time, Mr. Hyde can be considered a more simple organism of his kind who has animal-

like appearance, and described as ‘ Child of Hell’ in novel. On the other hand, Dr Jekyll is a

more complex organism who has consciousness and rationality in his thoughts which make

him the most peak place of the evolution of human being . Another hypothesis about the

dualism of these two self can be given as Sigmund Freud’s theory about structural model of

the mind. The struggle between Dr. Jekyll and his evil self Mr. Hyde reminds the opposition

between the Superego and the Id. Dr Jekyll cannot attain a respectable role which he expects

from the society while he reveals his real identity with his passions, and instincts. Just because

of the social exclusion he splits his self into two. When his first transformation comes true as

Mr. Hyde, he feels pleasure in violence and freedom which makes him the Superego having

no social codes and boundaries that cannot be prevented as the superego concerns the activity

of people which is felt unconsciously and unaltered by the control of human beings. On the

other hand, Dr. Jekyll is the ego who has the power of controlling the things mostly regarding

the Victorian Society which he lives. He knows what he is doing and how to control himself

as a respectable doctor in a society.

The concept of duality which is revealed in the personalities of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.

Hyde uncover the realities of The Late Victorian Society. The restrained self of Dr. Jekyll is

an ideal Victorian man who follows the strict boundaries and codes of the society. As it is

mentioned above, he has a good nature which represents the moral virtues of that period and

surpassed his implicit desires in order to be a reputable man whom seeks good standing in a

way most Victorian middle class desire to. Dr. Jekyll is a commodity of Victorian culture like

the products which are produced in factories after the Industrial Revolution. As he is a doctor

he has to follow set of social norms to be acceptable one in the society and he has to hold his

family name under a respectable life .All of them show us the identity of people are shaped by

the result of definite influences. His conscious of identity regarding Victorian society causes

to create his hidden-self profoundly and make a contradictory being growing day by day. His-

hidden self, Mr. Hyde is the opposite of the accepted norms of Victorian society who breaks

all the rules, kills people and reveal everything about his personality .The hidden-being, Mr.

Hyde who dominates the strict culture lead us the truths about how Victorian society puts

rules about how to be an individual in a Victorian Society. Another point which comes along

with the emergence of Mr. Hyde is the hypocrisy of that period. Stevenson tries to give us the

message that most of people who live in Victorian society suppress the pleasures and instincts

in their souls. Even if they wear an artificial mask in order to follow the strict boundaries of

their society (social class etc.) and behave like a respectable individual like Dr. Jekyll, their

mask will be their burden. When they find the things which are fun, they not only realize that

these are all against the determined rules of their strict community but also they have no way

out but go back to wear their mask again. At the end of the novel, this is what Dr. Jekyll does

when he no longer has chemical drugs in order to transform himself to his respectable

personality and stay as Mr. Hyde – with his surpassed side but he knows that he is not going

to be accepted by the society then commits suicide. After all of the points which I discussed

above , it is clearly seen that The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde mirror the

Victorian period rather than considering it with its literary form characteristics . It is

considered a Gothic novel which involves all elements of supernatural and imaginary

elements in it which provide us to realize how science improved in progress especially in

Victorian period and the experiment of Dr. Jekyll reflects the development at that period.

Even though these all can be considered effective comments regarding The Strange Case of

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is not possible to understand it as a whole without thinking that

what could be the real purpose Stevenson and historicizing it in a specific context and

background.

To conclude, Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a novel

which deepen our interest to The Late Victorian Period with its peak moment by the concern

about human body , nature and also its sensational background on the other side of medallion

which no one have the courage to face it but Dr. Jekyll.

El famoso crítico y teórico político marxista estadounidense Fredric Jameson enfatiza

la idea de "siempre historizar" en su investigación política y análisis sobre el marxismo, la

posmodernidad y las otras áreas que le interesan. Al considerar a Jameson, cuando pensamos

en los impactos de la historia y los incidentes que sucedieron en el tiempo, es

presumiblemente fácil hacer una conexión entre el período y las obras literarias. En resumen,

la mayoría de los lectores saben que casi todas las obras literarias como novelas reflejan el

trasfondo de las sociedades en las que están escritas.

La característica más distintiva de las novelas es su relevancia con la dimensión

Con respecto al dualismo, las hipótesis anticipadas por las principales figuras sobre la

psique humana y el cuerpo nos hacen conscientes para obtener el reclamo de la naturaleza

humana en la sociedad victoriana tardía. En primer lugar, el Dr. Jekyll es un científico que

tiene una teoría sobre la mente humana que consta de dos partes; lo bueno y lo malo, lo que

significa que las personas no son estereotipos de bien o de mal. El doble regalo del Dr. Jekyll

que crea en su propio laboratorio revela influencias de la hipótesis de Charles Darwin sobre el

origen de las especies. Si bien el Dr. Jekyll es un médico respetable, sofisticado y civilizado

tiene apariencia de animal, y se describe como "Niño del Infierno" en la novela. Por otro lado,

el Dr. Jekyll es un organismo más complejo que tiene conciencia y racionalidad en sus

pensamientos, lo que lo convierte en el lugar más destacado de la evolución del ser humano.

Otra hipótesis sobre el dualismo de estos dos seres puede darse como la teoría de Sigmund

Freud sobre el modelo estructural de la mente. La lucha entre el Dr. Jekyll y su malvado Sr.

Hyde recuerda la oposición entre el Superego y el Id. El Dr. Jekyll no puede lograr un papel

respetable que espera de la sociedad mientras revela su verdadera identidad con sus pasiones e

instintos. Solo por la exclusión social se divide en dos. Cuando su primera transformación se

hace realidad como el Sr. Hyde, siente placer en la violencia y la libertad, lo que lo convierte

en el superyó que no tiene códigos y límites sociales que no se pueden evitar, ya que el

superyó se refiere a la actividad de las personas que se siente inconsciente e inalterada por el

control. de los seres humanos. Por otro lado, el Dr. Jekyll es el ego que tiene el poder de

controlar las cosas principalmente con respecto a la Sociedad Victoriana en la que vive . Él

sabe lo que está haciendo y cómo controlarse como un médico respetable en una sociedad.

El concepto de dualidad que se revela en las personalidades del Dr. Jekyll y el Sr.

Hyde descubre las realidades de The Late Victorian Society. El yo sobrio del Dr. Jekyll es un

hombre victoriano ideal que sigue los estrictos límites y códigos de la sociedad. Como se

mencionó anteriormente, tiene una buena naturaleza que representa las virtudes morales de

ese período y superó sus deseos implícitos para ser un hombre de buena reputación que busca

Su ser oculto, el Sr. Hyde es lo contrario de las normas aceptadas de la sociedad

victoriana que rompe todas las reglas, mata a las personas y revela todo sobre su personalidad.

El ser oculto, el Sr. Hyde, que domina la cultura estricta, nos lleva a las verdades. sobre cómo

la sociedad victoriana establece reglas sobre cómo ser un individuo en una sociedad

victoriana. Otro punto que viene junto con la aparición del Sr. Hyde es la hipocresía de ese

período. Stevenson intenta transmitirnos el mensaje de que la mayoría de las personas que

viven en la sociedad victoriana suprimen los placeres e instintos en sus almas. Incluso si usan

una máscara artificial para seguir los límites estrictos de su sociedad (clase social, etc.) y

comportarse como un individuo respetable como el Dr. Jekyll, su máscara será su carga.

Cuando encuentran las cosas que son divertidas, no solo se dan cuenta de que todo esto va en

sino que vuelven a usar su máscara. Al final de la novela, esto es lo que hace el Dr. Jekyll

cuando ya no tiene drogas químicas para transformarse en su respetable personalidad y

permanecer como el Sr. Hyde, con su lado superado pero sabe que no va a ser aceptado por la

sociedad y luego se suicida. Después de todos los puntos que discutí anteriormente, se ve

claramente que El extraño caso del Dr. Jekyll y el Sr. Hyde reflejan el período victoriano en

lugar de considerarlo con sus características de forma literaria. Se considera una novela gótica

que involucra todos los elementos de elementos sobrenaturales e imaginarios que nos

permiten darnos cuenta de cómo la ciencia mejoró en el progreso, especialmente en el período

victoriano y el experimento del Dr. Jekyll refleja el desarrollo en ese período. Aunque todos

Para concluir, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde de Stevenson es una

novela que profundiza nuestro interés en el período victoriano tardío con su momento

culminante por la preocupación por el cuerpo humano, la naturaleza y también su sensacional

experiencia al otro lado del medallón. que nadie tiene el coraje de enfrentarlo excepto el Dr.

Jekyll.
