LEARNING THEORIES AND

THEIR IMPACT
EDUKASSY
 Understanding the definition of learning
theory is essential to pursuing a successful
career in teaching and making sure you know
how to help your students accomplish their
significant educational milestones.

A learning theory focuses on the internal and

external influences that affect learning
processes to explain the many different ways
people learn.
 No two people are alike and they may prefer
learning and experiencing knowledge differently.

 Thereare various learning theories that teachers

adopt in their classrooms and, depending on
each student's individual needs, each theory may
be equally beneficial.
 Learningis the process of growth and
development, where by the learner acquires a
body of knowledge, develops skills &
knowledge.

 Learning Theories are conceptual

frameworks describing how information is
absorbed, processed, and retained during
learning.

 Learning theories allow teachers to

better understand the process of
learning.
 Learningtheories are important because
they allow teachers to understand how their
students learn.

 Through using different learning methods,

teachers can develop more comprehensive
learning strategies and help students find
success in education.

 Learning theories can shape all areas of

learning, including the development of
curriculum in formal education or how
people participate in self-learning.

THEORIES
 BEHAVIORISM
 COGNITIVISM
 CONSTUCTIVISM
 CONNECTIVISM
 HUMANISM
 concentrates on the theory
that the external factors plan
the most important role in
how students learn.

 In behavioural learning
theory inner factors, such
as things students inherit
from their parents, have
little or no influence on
their learning.
 Teachers who use this theory may provide
students with positive reinforcements in the
classroom, as behaviourism believes that
rewarding students' positive behaviours
makes them more likely to repeat the same
positive behaviours in the future.

BEHAVIORS
 Come to class on time
 Have materials out when bell rings
 Participate in class discussion

Regular reviews
 A Learning theory that focuses on“How information
is received, organized, stored, and retrieved
by the mind.”
 Using the mind as information processor.

 The use of Instruction should be organized,

sequenced, and presented in a manner that is

understandable and meaningful to the learners.
 emphasizes Retention and Recall through the use of
quality teaching practices.
Application in the classroom
 The best way for a teacher to
apply cognitivism in the
classroom is to ask questions to
help students refine thinking.

 Visual aids are extremely effective

when teaching a lesson but they
must encourage the connection
with the student’s background
knowledge. The use of
flashcards, puzzles or
sorting- games can be
presented in the classroom
activities.

CONSTRUCTIVISM
 A theory that views learning as a process in
which the learner constructs knowledge based on
their past experiences.
 The teacher only acts as a facilitator who
encourages students to explore within a given
framework.
 Constructivism focuses on knowledge
construction, not knowledge reproduction.

 The students may collaborate with others to

organize their ideas and learn from each other to
construct their own knowledge.
APPLICATION IN THE CLASSROOM
 Group Work and Cooperation in learning
 Several students working together
 All members in group must be
cooperative
 Evolving constructivist perspectives on
learning

strategies

 Field Trips

 Experiments
CONNECTIVISM
 is a modern learning theory that supports the belief
that people learn when they form valuable
connections and navigate different social networks,
including digital networks that require them to use
technology to obtain information.

 In connectivism, things such as

hobbies, goals and other people
can be connections that impact someone's
learning and inspire them to learn more.

 Teachers can use this learning theory to

encourage students by using materials and tools
that those students find exciting.
Some useful teaching
strategies in Connectivism
 Student-centered activities

 Readily available technology

 Social networks
HUMANISM
 Maslow’s research on the Hierarchy of Needs is a
major concept within this theory, as it focuses on
the whole person.

 Learning is student-centered and

personal, the teacher as facilitator
of the learning process.

 The theory holds that self-actualization is the

ultimate goal of each individual.
(1) Making time to collaborate with other educators
(2) Evaluating students’ needs and wants regularly
(3) Connecting with parents to help meet specific student needs
