Lab #3 Salt Preparation

Skills assessed: ORR

Date: 13th February, 2024

Title: Salt Preparation
Aim: To prepare an insoluble salt by ionic precipitation
Apparatus/ Materials : filter funnel, conical flask, beaker, measuring cylinder, stirring rod, spatula, top
loading balance, filter paper, copper (II) sulphate, sodium hydrogen carbonate.

Diagram:

Procedure
1. Prepare a solution of copper sulphate followed by a solution of sodium carbonate, by adding 5g of the
salt to 50mL distilled water in separate beakers.
2. Combine the solutions in another beaker and stir.
3. Fold and fit the filter paper in a filter funnel
4. Place the filter funnel with paper in a conical flask.
5. Pour the mixture into the filter funnel with the paper and allow for all the filtrate to be removed from
the residue
6. Record all necessary observations as you prepare the salt

Observation
Fully describe the filtrate and residue and any other observations

Analysis:
1. Background information the method used, ionic precipitation and explain why this method was
used.
2. Identify the type of reaction and give information about the method of salt preparation
3. Comment on the starting materials of the salt formed
4. Write both a balanced chemical equation and an ionic equation for the reaction and name the
insoluble salt that you have prepared.
5. Include how the insoluble salt was formed (hint: ions)
