Emulsified Coal Tar Used as
Protective Coating for Asphalt Pavements
Test: - Date:_________
Density of Coal-Tar Emulsion
Ready to use

Product Description and Standard Compliance:

 Emulsified coal tar used as protective coating for concrete and asphalt pavements.
 Test compliance with standard ASTM - D - 3320- 98.

Test Method Compliance: -

 Test method compliance with standard ASTM – D – 2939 – 3 (Clans 7)

Apparatus: -
 Density container
 Weight balance
 Water bath
 Thermometer

Test Procedure: -
 Weight the density container and record as tare weight.
 Check the temperature of emulsion by using thermometer.
 If it is above the 25 ºC, stir the emulsion specimen and place in the 25 ºC water bath for
minimum 2 hrs. until the specimen temperature reaches at 25 ºC.
 After that remove the specimen from water bath and stir until homogeneous.
 Avoid trapping air in the specimen during stirring.
 Carefully fill the density container with the emulsion, avoiding the entrapment of air.
 Vibrate the cup until no further change in volume occurs and remove the excess emulsion
with clean rag.
 Weight the density container with emulsion and record as weight of emulsion.

Calculation: -
Weight of Container (W1) = _________________kg.

Weight of Container + Specimen (W2) =_________________kg.

Weight of Specimen (Ws) = W2 –W1
