Safety

Safety
General safety instructions
It is imperative that the following safety instructions are observed when using WALDNER
laboratory furniture:

4 If you smell gas, immediately open all windows and do not operate any electrical control
units (e. g. light switches).
4 In the event of a fire, inform the Fire Service without delay and fight the fire with a fire
extinguisher until the Fire Service arrives.
4 Always keep the access to emergency showers, eye showers and emergency exits clear.
4 Always wear appropriate safety clothing in laboratories.
4 Immediately operate the Emergency Stop button in the event of an accident with electrical
power.
4 Only perform hazardous tasks on your own if another person can provide first-aid in an
emergency.
4 Only use equipment that has been tested and is in correct working order.
4 Have any defects rectified without delay and inform your supervisor.
4 Only leave the workplace if it is not necessary to continuously supervise your work, or if
another person takes over supervision.
4 Only work outside normal working hours if it is not possible to perform the work at
another time, and always take suitable precautionary measures.
4 Store hazardous materials in such a way that they do not create a hazard to health or the
environment.

Safety

Warning instructions and their meaning


Warning instructions in this document warn about hazards and dangers that can occur when
using the product. The nature and source of the hazard and possible consequences of failure
to observe a warning instruction and measures to avoid the risk are specified in each warning
instruction.
The different hazard categories are specified by the following signal words:
• DANGER is used with warning instructions that could result in fatal injury if they are not
observed.
• WARNING is used with warning instructions that could result in serious injuries if they are
not observed.
• CAUTION is used with warning instructions that could result in minor injuries if they are
not observed.
• NOTICE is used with warning instructions that could result in damage if they are not
observed.

Warning instructions referring to an entire paragraph might be identified by additional


symbols.

Correct and proper use


Storage rooms are used for the storage of items of equipment and chemicals.
Storage cabinets - Product group 4 - Version 11.20 (EN)

The selection of the design depends on the substances stored and on the installation location.
The following materials are not permitted in storage rooms:
• Flammable liquids
• Gas cylinders
• Self-igniting and self-decomposing substances

Acids and alkalis may only allowed be stored in specially equipped laboratory cabinets for
storing acids and alkalis.
A special underbench unit for waste disposal is available for the storage of solid substances
and garbage.

Safety

Work performed by WALDNER


Installation and modification of WALDNER laboratory furniture should only be performed
by WALDNER service personnel or appropriately qualified and authorised personnel.
Inspection and/or maintenance work on WALDNER laboratory furniture should only be
performed by WALDNER service personnel or appropriately qualified and authorised
personnel. It should be performed every 12 months. Record the spare parts required for
this in a log.

Compliance with standards


All applicable regulations, such as EN standards, DIN, DVGW, TÜV test certificates, CE
marking, VDE and DGUV regulations and other official regulations and requirements, have
been taken into account in the design, manufacture and installation of the WALDNER
laboratory and school furniture product range.

Ex-proof area
These operating instructions do not contain laboratory furniture for use in potentially
explosive atmospheres (ex-proof areas).
Separate operating instructions for laboratory furniture for use in ex-proof areas are an
addition to the operating instructions.
Laboratory furniture for use in ex-proof areas is identified by the ex-proof area symbol.

Description
Storage room designs
Storage rooms are used for storing items of equipment and chemicals; they are equipped for
the requirements of the working environment in a laboratory.
The following designs are available:
• Underbench unit:
– On plinth
– On castors
– Suspended
– Self-supporting for fume cupboards
– Push-in for fume cupboards
– For sinks
• Suspended cabinet
• Laboratory cabinet
• Top-mounted cabinet
• Pull-out cabinet
• Emergency cabinet
• Exhaust cabinet:

– Underbench unit for fume cupboards for storing acids and alkalis

Underbench unit on plinth


Storage cabinets - Product group 4 - Version 11.20 (EN)

Underbench units on plinths are open at the top and provide additional storage space under
worktops and laboratory sinks. They are available for working heights of 750 mm and
900 mm.
The top of underbench units on plinths needs to be covered by a worktop and may only be
operated when connected to a service spine or a wall fixing. They can be freely installed in the
room when connected to a worktop and a minimum of two cabinets (but not one cabinet on
its own). Never exceed the maximum vertical load of connected underbench units,
see "Underbench unit on plinth", page 29.

Description

The plinths have four height-adjustable feet. The rear panel can be removed, see "Removing
the rear panel", page 27.
Underbench units on plinths are available with the following equipment:
• Hinged doors
• Hinged doors and drawers
• Drawers
• Full-height drawers (for disposal with waste bin)
• Open fronted storage shelf
• With or without extract air spigot

Fitting the Underbench units on plinths are attached at the bottom of the service spine and fixed with a

Description

Underbench unit on castors

Underbench units on castors are fitted with a top panel and can be moved about the
laboratory as required. This allows easy access to the valves and pipes behind the underbench
units. They are available for working heights of 750 mm and 900 mm.
Underbench units on castors are available with the following equipment:
• Hinged doors
• Hinged doors and drawers
• Drawers

The drawers have a change-pull-out catch as anti-tilt protection for the underbench unit,
which only allows one drawer to be opened at a time.
Underbench units on castors have two lockable swivel castors at the front and two
non-lockable castors at the rear.

Description

Suspended underbench unit

Suspended underbench units consist of an enclosed carcass. They are supported on the bench
frame on a profile rail and installed in the bench frame of the laboratory bench using two
fittings. They do not touch the floor of the laboratory. Suspended underbench units are
available for working heights of 750 mm and 900 mm.
Suspended underbench units can be moved laterally to protrude over the grid of the bench.
Suspended underbench units are available with the following equipment:
• Hinged doors
• Hinged doors and drawers
• Drawers

Removing the The suspended underbench unit can be removed from the top front rail of the laboratory
underbench unit bench and tilted forward by unscrewing the two screws on both sides and moving the two
fittings. The unit can then be lifted out from the bottom rear rail of the laboratory bench.
Prior to removing the underbench unit, the following prerequisites must be met:
• The underbench unit is completely empty
• All drawers are removed
• All shelves are removed

Push-in underbench units for fume cupboards stand on a plinth with four height-adjustable
feet and are pushed into the steel support frames of fume cupboards. The rear panel can be
removed, see "Removing the rear panel", page 27.
Push-in underbench units for fume cupboards are available with the following equipment:
• Hinged doors
• Full-height drawers (for disposal with waste bin)
• With or without extract air spigot

Front end sink for

Underbench units for sinks are open at the top and provide additional storage space under
laboratory sinks. The underbench units can be fastened in front of a service spine or a wall.
The front end sink is installed perpendicular to a double work bench. Underbench units for
sinks are available for a working height of 900 mm.
The plinths have four height-adjustable feet. The rear panel can be removed, see "Removing
the rear panel", page 27.
Underbench units for sinks are available with the following equipment:
• Hinged door
• Full-height drawer
• Swivel door

Description

Suspended cabinet

Suspended cabinets can be fastened to the wall or to a service spine. For reinforcement,
a central panel is incorporated in suspended cabinets with a width of 1,200 mm.
Suspended cabinets are available with the following equipment:
• Hinged doors
• Hinged glass doors
• Glass sliding doors
• Open fronted storage shelf
• Open fronted storage shelf with inclined sides

The inclined front side of the open suspended cabinets matches the inclination of the service
spine top.

Laboratory cabinets may only be installed along a wall and may not be used as room dividers.
Laboratory cabinets stand on a plinth with four height-adjustable feet and are screwed to the
wall to secure them against toppling over.

Top-mounted cabinet

In top-mounted cabinets for laboratory cabinets with extract air spigot the rear panel is
positioned further to the front. The rear panel can be removed to obtain access to the extract

Top-mounted cabinets are available with the following equipment:

Pull-out cabinets have two or three pull-outs and are used for the storage of liquid and solid
substances in suitable containers. The pull-outs can be accessed from both sides.
Pull-out cabinets stand on a plinth with four height-adjustable feet and are screwed to the
wall to secure them against tipping.

Pull-out cabinets are available with or without extract air spigot on the top shelf.

Fitting the baskets The baskets in the pull-outs can be inserted at different heights.

Emergency cabinet

Emergency cabinets contain protection and rescue materials and stand on a plinth with
four height-adjustable feet.
Emergency cabinets can be equipped with the following protection and rescue materials:
• First aid case
• Fire extinguisher (CO2, 5 kg)
• Fire blankets made of glass fabric
• Sand boxes
• Shovel

Description

Laboratory cabinet for storing acids and alkalis

Laboratory cabinets for storing acids and alkalis are available as top-mounted cabinets and
as underbench units. They are used for storing limited amounts of acids and alkalis or other
aggressive chemicals. The fittings on the laboratory cabinets are coated to protect them
against corrosion.
Laboratory cabinets for storing acids and alkalis stand on a plinth with four height-adjustable
feet and have a connection for permanent extract air.

They have to be screwed to the wall to prevent them from toppling over.
Laboratory cabinets for storing acids and alkalis are available with the following equipment:

• Fixed or pull-out shelves with trays made of polypropylene

Underbench units on plinths for the storage of acids and alkalis are used to store limited
amounts of acids and alkalis or other aggressive chemicals. The fittings on the underbench
units are coated and protected against corrosion.
The underbench units stand on a plinth with four height-adjustable feet and have a
connection for permanent extract air.
Underbench units on plinths for the storage of acids and alkalis are available with the
following equipment:
• Hinged doors
• Extendible shelves with polypropylene trays

Operation
Specific safety instructions
It is imperative that the following safety instructions are observed when using the laboratory
cabinets:

4 Only use suitable containers marked with the content for storing chemicals.
4 Only store hazardous materials up to a height at which they can be safely removed.
4 Do not store containers above your reach, which can only be carried using both hands.
4 Ensure that you do not exceed a container size of 1.5 litres per tray.
4 Make sure that you do not exceed an adjustable volume of 10 litres per tray.
4 Ensure that you do not exceed a capacity of 4.3 litres (with a grid of 600) and/or 7 litres
(with a grid of 900).
4 Do not store any flammable liquids in the laboratory cabinets.
4 Only store acids and alkalis in the acid and alkali cabinet designed for this purpose.
4 Only open laboratory cabinets as required.
4 Do not lift drawers and extendible shelves when pulling out.
4 Only move underbench unit on castors when closed.
4 To prevent them from toppling over, only move underbench units on castors if the drawers
have been prevented from extending by being secured by the lock of the change-pull-out
catch.
4 Release locking on the castors only for moving the underbench unit.
4 Ensure that the ventilation system is working on laboratory cabinets with extract air spigot.

Fitting the shelves


Each shelf sits on four shelf brackets and can be installed at different heights (grid height
32 mm). The two front brackets have spigots that prevent the shelves from sliding.

Operation

Removing the rear panel


By removing the rear panel it is easy to access the valves and pipes behind the underbench
units or the extract air spigot on the laboratory and top-mounted cabinet.
Prior to removing the rear panel, the following prerequisites must be met:
• The cabinet is completely empty
• All shelves are removed

The rear panel can be lifted out of the groove by the two grip holes and removed to the front.

Cleaning and maintaining


Regular cleaning increases safety and helps to retain the value of the equipment.

WARNING
Damage to health through contact with organic solvents
