CE ELECT 3S: EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING

QUIZ-001

Instructions: Calculate what is being required by the problem showing complete solution.

1. Given a proposed eight (8) Storey (10 meters by 20 meters) city library which is to be constructed in the Province of Abra (site-
to-fault-distance =8.3 km from Abra River Fault (more than 50 km approximate). It is designed under reinforced concrete with
special moment resisting frames. Assume regular weight per floor area to be 10 KPa while the roof deck weighs 8 KPa per floor
area. Regular floor to floor height is 3.20 m except for the first floor being 3.5 m.

1.1 Calculate the Storey forces and Storey shears and moments per floor level using the procedure mentioned in NSCP Vol 1 or in
the UBC using the latest Base Shear formula (NSCP-2015).

V x= Storey Shear Per Floor Level

Mx = Overturning Moment Per Floor Level
2. Discuss the main reason why restriction on height limit is being imposed to cities, municipalities, and provinces contradictory to
what the code dictates (eq. Special Moment Resisting System Height Limit-No Limit -NL).

Restrictions on building height is being imposed primarily because of safety concerns/reasons. Building or any structures pose
as a hazard itself to human welfare (occupants/non-occupants of the structure). “Earthquake does not kill people, building does!”

3. Calculate the intensity of loading on a beam where floor to floor height is 3.2 m with span of 5.5 m (beam dimensions, 250 mm
x 450 mm) using a 4 inches CHB plastered both sides (full grouted) assuming an opening of 15 % from architectural data.

𝜔 4” CHB = 2.5 kPa +0.24kPa*2 = 2.98 kPa ≈ 3.0 kPa

𝜔 load = (3.0 kPa) *(clear height)*(100% - %opening)

𝜔 load = (3.0 kPa) *(3.2-0.45)*(100% - 15%)

𝝎 load =7.0125 kN/m

5. Evaluate if torsional irregularity exists at the fourth-floor level given the story displacement data as shown below.

δL1 = 33.02 mm
δL2 = 25.4 mm

∆SL = δL1 − δL2 = 33.02 − 25.4 = 𝟕. 𝟔𝟐 𝐦𝐦

δR1 = 48.26 mm
δR2 = 30.48 mm

∆SR = δR1 − δR2 = 48.26 − 30.48 = 𝟏𝟕. 𝟕𝟓 𝐦𝐦

∆S MAX = 𝟏𝟕. 𝟕𝟓 𝐦𝐦

∆S MAX > 1.2 ∗ Average (∆S ) Torsional Irregularity Exist

∆SL +∆SR 7.62+17.75

1.2 ∗ Average (∆S ) = 1.2 ∗ ( ) = 1.2 ∗ ( ) = 15.222 mm
2 2

∆S MAX > 1.2 ∗ Average (∆S )satifiesd ∴Torsional Irregularity Exist
