ORGANIZED
INFANTS
INTRODUCTION
A newborn baby looks quite odd with the head that is
larger in relation to the potbellied trunk and
bowlegged lower extremities. If you observe long
enough, this little individual who smiles in his/her sleep,
flutter his/her eyes, frowns his/her eyebrows, pouts
his/her lips, and even twitches his/her cute little nose
will fascinate you. It is always interesting to know if
he/she is listening to family conversations or to
discover what is going on in his/her head while he/she
sleeps or gives you a blank stare.
REFLEXES
-A newborn infant has a large collection of
inborn and automatic responses to a particular
form of stimulation called reflexes. Some of
these reflexes are crucial for the baby's survival
such as sucking and swallowing reflexes. We call
these categories of reflexes as adaptive
reflexes.
INFANTS REFLEXES:
Blink Moro reflex
Biceps reflex (embracing reflex)
Knee jerk Sleeping reflex
Babinski Swimming reflex
Withdrawal reflex Rooting reflex
Plantar or toe grasp Babkin reflex
Topic neck reflex
Palmar/hand grasp
BEHAVIORAL STATE
Newborns have five different states of
wakefulness and sleep, referred to as states of
consciousness. These states frequently
alternate during the baby's first month. Babies
sleep for most of the day, about 16 to 18 hours
a day, which delights fatigued parents.
INFANTS STATES OF
CONCIOUSNESS
Regular, or NREM sleep
Irregular, or REM sleep
Drowsiness
Quiet alertness
Waking activity and crying
SLEEP
-Sleep cycles are recorded and
assessed through rapid-eye-movement
(REM) and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM)
to determine normal development of
cerebral cortex, which affects the
maturation of the central nervous system a
its overall function. During the REM sleep, the
brain-wave activity is like that of the waking
state.
CRYING
-Newborns only way to communicate is
trough crying. A cry of a n infant indicates their
emotions , state, need and neurogical health. In fact
, there are different cries of an infant defending on
the quality , amount , intensity that show their
current condition . When the baby is angry, adults
will hear a louder and more intense cry, while
hunger or distress cries sounds like whimper or a
moan.
Parents have the ability to recognize cries of
their own babies bacause of the unique vocal
signature for every baby, Babies cry for variety
of reason:
hunger
temperature change
discomfort
sudden noise
painful stimulus; and
sound of another baby crying
Some infants cry more than others per day.
Crying more than the normal spectrum may lead
to colic. Colic typically appears when a baby is
about two weeks old and usually goes away
around three to four months . Babies who have
colic cry their worst in late aternoon or early
evening and nothing seemd to sooth them. The
reason why babies develop colic and why it stops
without any intervention is still unknown , but
fortunantely it does go away.
Research shows that there are various ways o
soothing a crying baby. Indicate below are some of
the techniques to sooth a crying baby.

cuddling or rocking
carrying in arms
providing a pacifeier
swaddling
playing soft rhythmic sound; and
letting the baby cry for a while
