Phonics Games
Phonics Games
Phonics Bingo
This game can be used to reinforce letter and sound recognition. Create bingo cards with
different letters or sounds and call out the corresponding letters/sounds for children to mark off
on their cards.
Create matching cards with words and pictures from the same word family (e.g. "cat" and "bat")
and have children match them.
Rhyme Time
Give children a word (e.g. "cat") and have them come up with as many rhyming words as they
can (e.g. "bat," "hat," "rat," etc.)
Word Sort
Create a variety of word cards and have children sort them by their common phonetic sounds or
word families. (A & B sign, students must put all the a/b flashcards with the right sign)
Word Ladder
Provide a word and have children change one letter at a time to create new words until they
reach a final target word (e.g. "cat" to "hog" by way of "cot," "dot," and "hot").
Have children search for objects around the house or classroom that start with different letters
of the alphabet and say the sound out loud.
Hide phonics cards around the house or classroom and have your child find them. Once they
find a card, they have to read the word on it and give an example of a word that rhymes with it.
Phonics Twister
Use tape to create a giant Twister board on the floor with different phonics sounds in each
circle. Call out a sound and have your child put their hand or foot on the corresponding circle.
Phonics Pictionary
Draw pictures of words with newly-learnt phonics sounds in them and have your child guess the
word.
Create pairs of cards with words that have the same phonics sound. Mix them up and have your
child turn them over to find the matching pairs.
Write different phonics sounds on dice and have your child roll. Then, they have to say a word
that has that sound in it.
Phonics Charades
Act out words with newly-learnt phonics sounds in them and have your child guess the word.
Give phonics sound commands like "Simon says touch your nose if you hear the 's' sound in
sun."
Phonics Hopscotch
Draw a hopscotch board with different phonics sounds in each square. Call out a sound and
have your child hop on the corresponding square.
Phonics Go Fish
Play Go Fish with cards that have phonics sounds and words on them.
Phonics I Spy
Say "I spy with my little eye, something that starts with the 'p' sound" and have your child guess
what you're thinking of.
Phonics Hangman
Write words with missing phonics sounds on the board. Every time your child guesses an
incorrect sound, draw a part of the man. If they guess all the sounds before the man is
complete, they win!
Phonics Bowling
Write words with phonics sounds on bowling pins and have your child roll a ball to knock them
down. Every time they knock down a pin, they have to read the word on it.
