INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Deepfake technology is technology wherein you can edit videos with the use of artificial
intelligence to replace the facial appearance of one person to that of another. This is done with
the help of advance cameras and easy to use software apps. This is used for a variety of scenarios
for different goals such as entertainment, digital marking, political marketing, etc. However
this technology can be used to create realistic videos to spread fake information regarding
political leaders and celebrities. (Ahmed, 2022)
Teens among the age of 15-17 are more likely to use most social media platforms than
teens among the age of 13 and 14. Additionally it was also stated that older teens are more likely
to be near-constant users of the internet. (Anderson, 2023) The average screen time of teens is 7
hours and 22 minutes, (Duarte, 2023) which is 24 minutes higher than the global screen time of 6
hours and 58 minutes. (howarth, 2023) Their constant exposure to the internet means that they
consume more media than others. Thus it can increase their chances to come across edited media
such as deepfake.
Deepfake technology is also getting harder to detect. People can’t reliably detect whether
the media they are consuming are edited or not. Systematic bias was also found in the results,
which lead to the insight that people tend to be overconfident on their abilities to detect
deepfake. (Kobis, 2021) This is why it emphasize that further research should be conducted in
order to find out the level of awareness of teens.

Aims of the Study

This study seeks to determine the awareness of Regional Science High School IX grade
10 learners on the existence of deepfake. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following:
1. Are RSHS IX grade 10 learners aware of the existence of deepfake?
2. To what extent are they aware of and informed about deepfakes?
3. How was the deepfake utilized when they encountered it?
B. Significance of the study
The significance of this study is to know the level of awareness of the grade 10 Learners
of Regional Science High School Region IX regarding the existence of deepfake. This can help
inform not only the learners but the stakeholders as well regarding the awareness of students on
such media. This can provide awareness to students to avoid being misled or believe in fake
news by Deepfakes. This study may help teachers become more conscious of the importance of
including digital literacy into lessons. This knowledge can facilitate cooperative efforts to
provide Grade 10 learners with a safer online environment and provide them the tools they need
to make wise decisions. Furthermore, the study's findings can offer insightful information about
how well-informed students are about deepfakes. It establishes the framework for additional
research and debate on navigating the benefits and difficulties brought forth by this quickly
developing technology. accordingly/ (Nguyena, 2022).

D. Delimitations of the Study

This study will only focus on the awareness and the levels of awareness of grade 10
learners of Regional Science High School - IX on the existence of Deepfake. It is important to
acknowledge the level of awareness in the existence of deepfake. This study is only limited on
the level of awareness on the existence of deepfake technology among grade 10 students of
School Year 2023-2024. The researchers will randomly select 15 learners from each section of
the grade 10 curriculum. The data will be collected using a paper-pencil type survey that will be
distributed to the grade 10 learners to determine their level of awareness on the existence of
deepfake technology.
