INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
 Attempt all the questions in section A and five from section B.
 All working must be shown clearly
 Begin each answer on a fresh sheet of paper.
 In numerical working g= 9.8ms-2.
 No paper should be given for rough work.
 Mathematical tables with list of formulae and squared paper are provided.
 Silent non programmable calculator may be used.
SECTION A
(Answer all questions in this section)

1. Show that the equation 2 tanx=3 x has a real root between and hence use linear

2. In the two rounds of a show jumping competition, seven riders recorded times, in
seconds, given in the following table.

11. ABCD is a rectangle with AB=3 m as the positive x-axis and AD=4 m as the positive
y-axis. Forces of magnitude 6N, 4N, 10N, 8N and 15N act in the directions AB, AD,
AC, CD, and BD respectively in the direction of the letters. Find the;
(a) Magnitude of the resultant force and its direction. (7 marks)
b) Line of action of the resultant force and point where the resultant cuts the x-
axis, by taking moments at A. (5 marks)

14. (a) Use trapezium rule with 6 sub ordinates to estimate ∫ cosx dx , correct to 3 decimal

b) Determine the percentage error in approximating the above integral using
trapezium rule. Hence suggest how the error can be minimized. (6 marks)
15. (a) A ball is projected upwards at a speed of 36 m s −1 from height H from the ground.
If the ball hits the ground 8.5 s later, find the value of H and the velocity with which
the ball hits the ground. (6 marks)
b) A Car initially moving at a velocity of 20 m s −1 accelerates uniformly at a rate
of 2 m s− 2 for 5 s . It maintains this velocity for 10 s and then decelerates uniformly
in 6 s. By drawing a velocity time graph, determine the total distance travelled by
the car. (6 marks)
16. The marks of 8 students were recorded from two principal subjects Mathematics and
Geography and were recorded in the table below.

(a) Draw a scatter diagram and the line of best fit. Hence estimate the mark for
Geography for which Mathematics is 60. (6 marks)
