Course Objective:
• To familiarize the students with the concepts of engineering chemistry, material
characterization and green chemistry.

Course Outcomes:
The students will be able:
1. Understand the essential requirements of water and its importance in industry.
2. Understand the different analytical methods.
3. Understand the basics of polymers, their applications in industry and recent
advancements in the polymer field.
4. Apply the concepts of electrochemistry in energy storage devices.
5. Demonstrate the concepts of phase, component and degree of freedom, Gibb’s phase
rule.
6. Understand and apply the principles of green chemistry.

2 Analytical Methods UV-visible, IR: Principles and Applications. 8
Thermo-gravimetry, Differential Thermal Analysis and Differential
Scanning Calorimetry: Principles and Applications.
3 Polymers: Functionality and Degree of Polymerization, Mechanism of 8
Polymerization, Molecular Weights of Polymers, Conducting Polymers
(Polyaniline, Polypyrrole, Polyacetylene) Industrial applications of
Polymers.
4 Electrochemistry: Primary and Secondary battery systems, Zinc-Carbon 6
cells, Lead storage and lithium batteries. Fuel Cells, Recent Advancement
in Batteries
5 Phase Equilibrium: Definitions of Phase, component and degree of 8
freedom, Gibb’s phase rule. One component systems: Water and sulphur.
Two component systems: Pb-Ag and Cu-Ni.
6 Green Chemistry: Principles of Green Chemistry; Numerical on atom 4
economy; Examples of Green Methods of Synthesis, Reagents and
Reactions, Evaluation of feedstock, Future trends in Green Chemistry.
