CURVILINEAR MOTION
1. The baseball player A hits the baseball at vA = 40 ft/s and θA = 60° from the horizontal. When
the ball is directly overhead of player B he begins to run under it. Determine the constant
speed at which B must run and the distance d to make the catch at the same elevation at
which the ball was hit.
2. The snowmobile is traveling at 10 m/s when it leaves the embankment at A. Determine the
time of flight from A to B and the range R of the trajectory.
3. If the dart is thrown with a speed of 10 m/s, determine the shortest possible time before it
strikes the target. Also, what is the corresponding angle θA at which it should be thrown, and
what is the velocity of the dart when it strikes the target?
5. Water flows from a roof with an initial velocity of 0.9 m/s at an angle of 22° with the horizontal.
Determine the range of distance x for which the water will enter the drum.
6. Cars move around the “traffic circle” which is in the shape of an ellipse. If the speed limit is
posted at 60 kph, determine the maximum acceleration experienced by the passengers.
8. At a given instant in an airplane race, airplane A is flying horizontally in a straight line, and its
speed is being increased at the rate of 8 m/s 2. Airplane B is flying at the same altitude as
airplane A and, as it rounds a pylon, is following a circular path of 300-m radius. Knowing that
at the given instant the speed of B is being decreased at the rate of 3 m/s2, determine, for the
positions shown the velocity of B relative to A.
10. The car increases its speed at a constant rate from 40 mph at A to 60 mph at B. Determine the
magnitude of its acceleration when it has traveled along the road a distance 120 ft.
