THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The English department is divided into four main subjects: Language, Reading Workshop,
Science, and Science Laboratory. The goal of the English department is to make learning English
a wonderful, fun, and attractive experience, through activities that develop productive and
receptive skills and events that help create confidence and connections to the language.

International videoconferences allow the students to live their English experience. This
opportunity begins in second grade. The students participate in conferences with museums,
zoos, and sites from all over the world.

Cultural Exchanges in places such as India, Vietnam, Denver, Washington, New York, England
and France, expand students’ communicative and multicultural experiences.

The Carol Baur Foundation, as an ECOSOC member, provides students the opportunity for
active participation in the United Nations Forum, an experience that enlarges, completes, and
enriches development.

University of Cambridge Exam preparation is vital in the Language classroom so as to ensure

that the students are ready for their Cambridge Standardized Certification, which is valid all over
the world.

Books

In order to support parents’ economy, there is a rent payment for the Language books. The
students will be held responsible for the proper use and care of the books throughout the school
year.

These books will be sent home during the first week to be covered with transparent plastic and
returned with a label indicating the student’s name and grade.

Notebooks
The English notebooks are divided into categories. One notebook will be for Grammar. One
notebook will be for Reading. One notebook will be for writing. One notebook will be used for
Science. The English notebooks and the Science scrapbook will be held to the same standards as
the Spanish notebooks and graded on a similar rubric. They must be neat, clean, and complete.
so students can use them to study properly.

The development of creativity and quality of work, reflects the character of each student,
therefore illustrations should be done by the students. Stamps or graphic materials will not be
accepted.

Blocks
Throughout the year, teachers will be assigning students “Blocks” as homework. These blocks
should be done in the scrapbook which is left at home. The teachers will always ask for the block
at least three days in advance. They should be done by the students, with different materials, and
high quality work.

SCIENCE

Objective
The main objective of science is to create consciousness and respect for this interesting and
intricate subject.
The students will be expected to explore, reason, deduce, problem solve, discover, invent and
create.

The students will be exposed to the three basic areas of science: Life Science, Earth Science, and
Physical Science.

Project Based Learning Activities

To further the students´ knowledge and allow them to be independent learners, once a year they
will participate in a project based learning activity, in which they will spend a month honing in on
one specific theme and creating a project and presentation to be shared with the parents at the
end of the process.
The students will develop important skills throughout the project such as team work,
independent investigation, project organization and oral production in English.

The majority of the work is done in the classroom, but we will ask for parent’s support with some
materials.

Field Research Survey

The objective of the Field Research Survey is to motivate the students to investigate beyond the
average scope and to deepen their knowledge through real life experiences.

The steps will include a pre-research activity, an onsite investigation, a written wrap up, and an
oral presentation.

The format will vary based on each individual project. The teacher will specify the structure and
expectations in a circular a month before the projects are due.

Laboratory

The objective of the laboratory is to give the students a concrete and tactile explanation and
connection to what they study abstractly in Science class.

It is very important that the students bring their lab coats and materials to every class so that
they are able to participate in these interesting and exciting experiments.

In order to work in an Earth conscious and sustainable way, we ask that the students bring their
materials in their Carol Baur cloth bags and that the students bring the exact amount of material
asked for so as not to have any waste.
LANGUAGE

Objective
The objective of the Language program is to provide a solid, English base that will prepare the
students for their future goals and needs.

The language classes are broken up into several subjects so as to fulfill all the requirements for
optimum fluency and accuracy of the language. The subjects include Grammar and Listening,
Writing, Reading and Literature, and Reading Workshop.

The students will also participate in various activities each trimester to hone and perfect their
oral presentation skills. These activities include Spelling Bee and Creative Expression.

Beginning in 3rd grade, on Fridays the students will have quizzes about verbs and vocabulary
seen throughout the week. (Quizzes will not be applied during the weeks of Spelling Bee or
Creative Expression)

The students will also have weekly Cambridge Exam practice, so as to fully prepare them for their
annual Cambridge certification.

Spelling Bee
Each trimester, the students will be given a list of spelling bee words to study at home. In class,
the students will learn the use, meaning, and pronunciation of each word as they will be exposed
to them in their Reading and Literature class. Every trimester, the students will present their
spelling bee in front of the group. (1st-3rd grade spell front and back)

Creative Expression

Each trimester the students will participate in a Creative Expression activity. The objective of
these activities is to make a deeper connection to written and oral text through diverse
presentations and projects.

Creative Expression will be presented in class and may include written text or spoken word. Each
teacher will send home specific instructions as to the requirements for each presentation.

Reading Workshop
The objective of Reading Workshop is to help the students fall in love with reading. The class will
include the use of books, magazines, and the APP Kids A-Z. The students will receive their
passwords during the first month of school. They are encouraged to use this great resource at
home as well.
Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on weekly quizzes, tri-monthly exams, notebooks, and class work.
Exams will be sent home in the exam folder at the end of each trimester so parents can sign
them.

Agenda
Students should bring their agenda every day so they can keep track of homework, exams, event
dates, and circulars. The agenda is the key to communication between parents and teachers.
