COURSE DESIGN

COURSE TITLE : SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING

NOMINAL DURATION : 600 Hours


QUALIFICATION : NC I
COURSE DESCRIPTION : This course is designed to enhance the
knowledge, desirable attitudes and skills of metal arc welder in accordance with
industry standard. It covers core competencies such as welding carbon steel
plates using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in fillet and groove weld
position. It also includes competencies like interpreting drawing sketches,
performing industry calculation, contributing to quality system, using hand tools,
preparing weld materials, setting up of welding equipment, fitting materials and
repairing welds.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Student must possess any of the following qualifications:
• Can communicate both oral and written.
• Have potential/skill as per High School Occupational Interest
Inventory (HSOIII) results.
• Possesses desirable and healthy attitude towards skill activities.
• Must have passed interview and aptitude test.
• Must submit the following documents:

▪ Parent consent.

▪ Medical certificate issued by a government physician

▪ Certificate of good moral character

LO1: WELD CARBON STEEL PLATES IN FLAT POSITION (1G)
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
1. Weldment sides are maintained free from defects and discontinuity.
2. Weld appearance of not greater than 2mm side lap weld deposits is observed in welding layer weld for
1G.
3. Weld appearance of not greater than 3.25 mm weld reinforcement is maintained in welding 1G.
4. Work angle 90° and travel angle 20° - 25° are observed.
