1. ‘Today, we are going to use shakers to make sounds and describe them.’
Encourage children to explore the different sounds that each container makes.
Enhancements
2. Model shaking each container. ‘What does your shaker sound like?’ Model
using words to describe the sound, such as ‘loud’, ‘quiet’, ‘soft’, ‘hard’ or ‘noisy’. • Add more containers and materials into the workshop area for children to explore
making different sounds.
3. Ensure each child has the opportunity to shake each container. As a group,
discuss which sound each child likes or doesn’t like. • When children are exploring the music area, encourage them to describe the sounds
they make with the instruments.

4. Show the children the resources they have to make their own shaker.

5. Model taking a container and filling it with one/different materials. Look, Listen, Note
6. Close the container (making sure it is tightly closed) and model shaking and
describing the sound. For example, ‘I can hear the stones rattling.’ How well can the children…?
7. Each child has a turn to create their own shaker and select the resources to
