 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Cultivating mangrove crabs stands as the cornerstone of livelihoods for coastal

communities in the Philippines. The conventional approach involves converting coastal lands
into fishponds, a practice that has persisted over the years. However, the industry is grappling
with stagnation due to a dearth of innovation and slow technology integration, a situation
underscored by the country's classification with minimal mechanization (Tacio, 2022).
Consequently, the agricultural practices employed today closely mirror those of previous
generations, relying on traditional and inefficient methods.
In the specific case of fishponds, a significant challenge emerges as the expansive size
inhibits crabs from securing a consistent supply of food, resulting in crabs being underdeveloped
or lacking in desirable fat content. While the concept of mangrove crab fattening has been in
existence, farmers encounter difficulties in ensuring equal nutrition during feeding times,
exacerbated by the competitive nature of crabs confined to smaller ponds. Furthermore, the
inherent cannibalistic behavior of mangrove crabs poses a threat, with larger crabs gaining a
survival advantage and preying on their smaller counterparts.

 Possible Solutions & Interventions

 E-LIMANGO – an indoor farming system of mangrove crabs utilizing

sensors for water quality monitoring and automatic feeder. This way of
farming does not you to have a pond to be able to farm mangrove crabs.
Even at home as long as you have the necessary resources, you will be able
to have a high earning agribusiness.
