PROGRAM: Nutrition
J. Design
I. Rationale
The Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) is a human resource development strategy of the Philippine Plan of
Action for Nutrition, which involves the recruitment, training , deployment and supervision of volunteer
workers or Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS).
Presidential Decree No. 1569 mandated the deployment of one BNS in every barangay in the country to
monitor the nutritional status of the children and/or link communities with nutrition and related service
providers. PD 1569 also mandated the NNC to administer the program in cooperation with local
government units.
Thus, this Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) Basic Course Training will be conducted to be able to deliver
nutrition and nutrition-related services to barangay by caring for the malnourished and nutritionally
vulnerable, mobilizing the community and linkage building
II. Objectives
1. To equip the BNSs with the basic information and rationale using the life cycle approach for good
health and nutrition
2. To enhance skills of BNSs in helping different target groups address health and nutrition through
behavior change
3. To enhance the knowledge & skills of BNSs in promoting breastfeeding & good nutrition for lactating
mothers for mothers and different stakeholders in the community.
