FMC Corporation offers a range of agricultural solutions tailored to the needs of farmers, including herbicides, insecticides ,
and fungicides. Some of FMC's major products and their common uses, especially relevant to farmers in North India, are:
•CoragenⒹ Insecticide: Coragen is used to control pests like caterpillars, bollworms, and fruit borers in crops such as
cotton, vegetables, and pulses. Its unique mode of action makes it highly effective in managing insect resistance and
minimizing environmental impact.
BeneviaⒹ Insecticide: This insecticide is effective against a wide range of pests such as aphids, thrips, and whiteflies in crops
like cotton and vegetables commonly grown in North India. It provides long-lasting protection and helps farmers maintain healthy
crop yields.
•TalstarⒹ EZ Insecticide: Talstar EZ is widely used for the control of termites, mosquitoes, and other pests in agriculture and
public health settings. In North India, it can be valuable for protecting crops like wheat, maize, and sugarcane from
insect damage, ensuring higher yields and better-quality produce.
Affinity BroadSpec Herbicide: Affinity BroadSpec is a herbicide designed to control broadleaf weeds in various crops such as
wheat, barley, and oats. It provides selective control over weeds like chickweed, henbit, and mustard, helping farmers mainta in
clean and healthy crop fields.
Likewise, there are many other products like Picxel (organic manure), Advantage, Furagro and Legend. These products from
FMC Corporation are trusted by farmers globally for their effectiveness, reliability, and environmental sustainability. In No rth
India, where agriculture plays a vital role in the economy, these solutions help farmers overcome challenges related to pest
and weed management, ultimately contributing to increased productivity and profitability in farming operation.
FAW AND CORAGEN
Fall Armyworm (FAW), a destructive pest that can cause significant damage to maize (corn) crops and various
other crops.
Description: Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a moth species native to tropical and subtropical
regions of the Americas. It has spread to other parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and Oceania, causing
considerable agricultural
losses.
Life Cycle:
1. Egg Stage: Adult female moths lay eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves or in the whorls of maize
plants.
2. Larval Stage: The eggs hatch into larvae (caterpillars) within a few days. The larvae go through several
instars (growth stages), feeding voraciously on maize foliage, tassels, and developing ears.
3. Pupal Stage: After feeding and reaching maturity, the larvae pupate in the soil or plant debris.
4. Adult Stage: Adult moths emerge from pupae and begin the cycle anew. They are nocturnal and primarily
active during the late evening and night.
Damage to Maize Crops:
1. Feeding Damage: Fall Armyworm larvae are voracious feeders and can cause extensive damage to
maize crops by consuming leaves, tassels, and developing kernels.
1. Reduced Yield: Severe infestations can lead to significant yield losses in maize crops, affecting
both quality and quantity of the harvest.
2. Secondary Damage: FAW infestations can also predispose maize plants to secondary infections
by pathogens, further exacerbating crop damage.
Symptoms of Fall Armyworm Infestation:
1. Window Pane Feeding: Larvae may consume tissue between veins, giving leaves a window-pane
appearance.
2. Skeletonized Leaves: Larvae may completely consume leaf tissue, leaving behind only the veins.
3. Scraping and Faecal Pellets: Larvae leave behind dark-coloured faecal pellets and may scrape
the leaf surface.
4. Whorl Damage: Larvae may bore into the whorl of maize plants, damaging the growing
point and affecting plant development.
Recommendations: Early detection and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are crucial
for managing Fall Armyworm infestations in maize crops. This may include monitoring, cultural
practices, biological control agents, and judicious use of insecticides when necessary.
FMC’S CORAGEN
Mode of Action:
- Coragen contains the active ingredient Chlorantraniliprole, which belongs to the class of chemicals known
as anthranilic diamides.
- It works by disrupting the insect's nervous system, specifically targeting the calcium channels in muscle
cells. This disrupts muscle contractions, leading to paralysis and eventual death of the insect.
Benefits Against Fall Armyworm (FAW):
1. Effective Control
2. Residual Activity
3. Systemic Action
4. Selective Action
5. Resistance Management
Recommended doses of Coragen:
In the first 2-3 leaf stage: 80 ml per 200 litre water for 1 acre.
After 15 days, at 5-6 leaves stage: same dose of 80 ml per 200 litre water for 1 acre.
OBJECTIVES AND VISION
1. Raise Awareness
2. Introduce Coragen
3. Demonstrate Application
4. Field Trials
