studying while working full time. There are some students who are
able to progress seamlessly through their actuarial studies without
intervention but these students are very much in the minority.

Failing exams is traumatic for the student and one of the aims of
this support structure is to prevent unnecessary failures. In addition,
the current system results in a significant amount of actual costs
(fees paid for exams where the student is not going to pass, fees
paid to examiners for marking a script where the student will not
pass), as well as hidden costs in the system, mainly related to the
administrative support base of exams. The fact that many people
are writing exams when they will not pass means that the system is
much less efficient than it could be.

If a student gets an FC/FD in an exam, certainly more than once,

we would strongly recommend that the student speaks to a trusted
friend, colleague, manager, supervisor, mentor, or someone in the
ASSA Member Engagement team, to consider whether an actuarial
career is the best journey for them.

does cost significantly less than the tuition course, and the time requirement is the time to write the CPE exam,
which is the same as the final exam, with the option of getting additional support through marked assignments.

Being proactive in improving your chances of passing

When preparing for an exam every student should attempt at least one exam under exam conditions, even if it
is self-marked. Hence the CPE only option is not requiring the student to do anything over and above what they
should be doing anyway, but now with the additional benefit of pre-exam feedback that will assist in the student
to assess how ready they are for the final exam.

Academy Bursary Program

Some students may not have the financial means to take up these support products, however most employers
should pay for the intervention. If the employer does not support these interventions then ASSA is happy to
engage with the employer to try and understand why they are not funding the intervention. If the student
requires financial assistance they can apply for a bursary from ASSA. Financial considerations should not get in
the way of a student doing an intervention, or writing exams. Please see Annexure D for more information about
the Academy Bursary Program.

Planning for the pass

In closing the aim of the ESI is not to frustrate the student or add additional costs to their studies but rather to help
the student have a better and more efficient journey through their actuarial studies. Well timed interventions
and proactive measures to improving chances of passing will avoid the student incurring unnecessary costs and
study time.
