Choices meet Commitment:

Industrial & Institutional Cleaning

Market driven Solutions for
I&I Applications

Efficiency, high-performance and hygiene are essential for

industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaning applications. At the same time,
those cleaners need to be safe for use by employees and need to contribute
to sustainable development. This applies to commercial laundry as well as
to cleaning applications in hospitals and cafeterias, in manufacturing plants or
in the vehicle and transportation care.

We help our customers to meet these market needs by providing choices for
innovative, industry-proven solutions and by understanding the everchanging
legal and regulatory requirements. Our broad range of ingredients includes
surfactants, water-soluble polymers, chelating agents, biocides, optical effect
products, wax emulsions and corrosion inhibitors.

Based on our deep understanding of our customers’ needs and the market trends
combined with our long lasting commitment to research and development we are
the partner of choice for the formulation of cleaning products in I&I applications.

It’s because at BASF, we create chemistry.

Convenience in
Building Care
“Easiness” and “excellence” are key convenience
requirements in building care. Time saving and effort-
less cleaning operations with outstanding and perceived
performances lead to a recognized efficacy and efficiency
in cleaning.

Easy-to-Clean-Again
Surface modification polymers, e.g., Polyquart ® PRO A and
Polyquart ® Ampho 149 (for surface hydrophobization),
Polyquart ® Ecoclean and Lupasol ® PN 60 (for surface hydro-
philization), provide “easy-to-clean-again” properties. This will
save you time and resources. They show outstanding perfor-
mances in soil removal, quick and easier cleaning, because of
the smart modification of the surfaces.

High Gloss and Streak-free

Clean surfaces must be glossy and without visible residues such
as streaks or spots.
Surfactants with film forming behavior, e.g., Glucopon ® types make
a relevant contribution to high gloss.

Streak-free evaluation of a 1% surfactant solution

Fatty alcohol EO Glucopon® types

Surface modification polymers, both hydrophobic and hydrophilic,

e.g., Polyquart ® types and Lupasol ® PN 60 enhance gloss further.
Easy to Rinse with Foam Control
The rinsing step can prolong cleaning operations when
foam is difficult to remove. The cleaning step can be easier
and faster by controlling foam and/or avoiding rinsing.
A test formulation based, e.g., on Glucopon ® types and
Dehydem ® Supra (foam suppressor) enables excellent cleaning
and gloss together with low foam properties.

Hand Hygiene
Hand Hygiene with Irgasan ® DP 300
Hand hygiene plays a major role in the protection of people
from diseases caused by infectious microorganisms. Hand
washing in all public areas, such as public toilets in offices,
restaurants, bars, schools, airports, railway stations, etc.,
is a simple and effective measure to curb the spreading of
harmful microorganisms via hand-to-hand or hand-to-surface
contacts, and thus to reduce cross-contaminations. In hospi-
tals and medical centers, hand washing and hand disinfection
are main hygiene factors to fight “hospital-acquired infections”,
especially antibiotic-resistant germs.

In public buildings, offices and hospitals alike, different sources

of contaminations with microorganisms can be identified. For
example, through direct contact with surfaces, e.g., mobile and

germs can be transferred to people’s hands, and from there to
other surfaces and equipment or even directly to other people’s
hands. Therefore, beside regular cleaning and disinfection of
surfaces, equipment, and instruments that can be sources
of microbial contaminations, washing and disinfection of hands
is the most important measure to prevent the spreading of
infectious and other unwanted microorganisms.

Antimicrobial active agents such as Irgasan ® DP 300 play

an essential part in the prevention of infections by killing
many harmful bacteria and other pathogenic organisms like
viruses and fungi at low biocide active concentrations.
Irgasan ® DP 300 is a safe antimicrobial agent that is used
worldwide in many personal care and hygiene products to
provide effective protection against microbes. It has been
used for over 40 years and has become the most researched
antimicrobial ingredient with regard to human safety and the
environment.

Many studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of hand

hygiene products containing Irgasan ® DP 300 when used in
domestic, industrial, and medical environments. Products that
contain 0.3 – 1% of Irgasan ® DP 300 in optimized formulations
provide a strong instant killing of pathogenic microorganisms
combined with a long-lasting activity on the skin, and can
therefore be used for hand disinfection in private homes, public
buildings, as well as medical, industrial, and institutional areas.

Hand Disinfection
Irgasan ® DP 300 is an ideal biocidal active for leave-on as well as
rinse-off products in hand hygiene providing remarkable benefits.
It combines a quick bactericidal effect during the washing process
with a long-term bacteriostatic efficacy on the skin after washing.

Irgasan ® DP 300 is suitable for a wide range of formulations.
It can be easily formulated in disinfecting soaps and hygienic
cosmetic products, and shows an excellent performance even in
combination with anionic surfactants.

From the hygiene claim to professional hand disinfectants

Depending on the concentration of Irgasan ® DP 300 as well as
the type and amount of surfactants and other excipients, such as
hydrotropes and organic acids, rinse-off products like hand soaps
fulfill the strong requirements of bactericidal activity in hand
disinfectants.
The disinfecting activity of Irgasan ® DP 300 in hand soaps is
influecend by other components of the formuation
Negative effects caused by high concentrations of surfactants
can be compensated by addition of hydrotropes and organic
acids
This enables hand soap formulations with high surfactant
concentrations exhibiting strong disinfectant efficacy.

Long-lasting Protection
In addition to its strong immediate antimicrobial efficacy,
Irgasan ® DP 300 provides also an effective long-lasting protection
up to 12 hours after hand wash. Compared with standard active
agents, e.g. quaternary ammonium compounds, this unique
long-term antibacterial property can be visualized using the
finger imprint test.

This test is performed on agar plates, where the bacterial

growth of the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus is
generated during a defined incubation time. After washing
his hands with liquid soap, the test person tips his index for
1 minute on the surface of the agar plate which contains test
bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus aureus ). During the contact
of the fingertip with the agar surface, Irgasan ® DP 300 can

migrate from the skin into the agar medium. Afterwards, the
Finger imprint test
agar plates are incubated for 24 hours at 37°C. During the
incubation time, the bacteria in the agar grow to visible colonies.
Only in areas where the bacterial growth is inhibited by the
antimicrobial Irgasan ® DP 300, no colonies are detectable
resulting in a growth free inhibition zone around the contact
zone of the finger tip.
In order to determine the long-lasting activity of washed hands,
the finger imprint test can be done at set intervals after the hand
washing procedure.

On the pictures below, the long-lasting antimicrobial protection

of the hand soap with Irgasan ® DP 300 is clearly visible.
Even 2 hours after hand wash, there is no bacterial growth on the
agar plate, meaning that the skin surface of the test person is still
protected. In comparison, antimicrobial hand soaps containing
other biocides, such as

Test Formulations
Irgasan ® DP 300 can be formulated in a broad range of
rinse-off formulations. Owing to the excellent compatibility of
Irgasan ® DP 300 with anionic, cationic, amphoteric, and nonion-
ic ingredients, formulators can combine the strong antimicrobial
activity of Irgasan ® DP 300 with excellent cleaning and sensorial
properties in soap products.

In order to fulfill regulatory requirements on fast bactericidal

activity, formulations containing Irgasan ® DP 300 need to
be optimized especially with regard to the choice of surfactants

and hydrotropic agents as well as the use of organic acids. ® D P 30
