CE 413 – CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Second Semester, SY 2023-2024

Activity No. 2

Differentiate Scientific Management and Humanistic Management. Which do you think is

the best management between the two? Discuss, explain, and elaborate your answer.

Answer:

“Build your empire first and everything will follow." This adage encapsulates the
essence of my journey in embracing Humanistic Management as my guiding principle in leading
teams and organizations.

In the vast landscape of management philosophies, two distinct approaches stand out:
Scientific Management and Humanistic Management. The first one which is popularized by
Frederick Taylor, focuses and emphasizes efficiency, standardization and systematic methods to
productivity. However, the latter, which is rooted in Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of needs and
McGregor’s Theory, highlights employees' well-being and development as individuals. I believe
that choosing one sole approach to use in management depends highly on a lot of factors which
includes our leadership values, norms, and even culture.

Throughout my leadership journey, my management approach has evolved to embrace

Humanistic Management as my guiding principle. I remember my speech when I ran for the
position of Student Government President where I declared my commitment to my fellow
students and leaders: “I do not limit myself with organizing events and launching a project.
Soon, I will leave this institution but I will leave remarkably by making you remember that you
had someone who believed in you, stood by you, and fought for and with you, because that is
what I am running for”. I am a leader who values the capabilities and skills of my team and sees
the full potential in them. I have learned from my own experience and from my leaders that first,
I have to establish a strong foundation and bond and success in all areas will follow.

Embracing Humanistic Management, I committed to fostering environments where team

members feel valued, heard, and empowered to reach their full potential. This approach
emphasizes empathy as a driving force behind effective leadership, recognizing that trust and
collaboration flourish when diverse perspectives are truly understood and appreciated.
When we prioritize the well-being and development of our team members, we sow the
seeds of sustainable success that bear fruit for both people and organizations alike. Like a
sturdy oak tree firmly rooted in fertile soil, organizations thrive when their members are nurtured
and supported to grow. Through the lens of Humanistic Management, we build not just
businesses, but communities of flourishing individuals who contribute their unique gifts to the
collective tapestry of humanity.
