Picture Dictionary ... Word List Jules Verne was born in Nantes, France on 8 February, 1828. He was the oldest of five children, His father was a lawyer and his mother came from a family that owned a shipbuilding business. Young Jules Verne loved the sea. When he was twelve years old he ran away and hid on a ship going to the West Indies, but he was found and sent back home. ‘n 1847, his father sent him to Paris to study law. While in Paris, Verne became fascinated with the theatre and began to write plays. He passed his law degree in 1849, but continued to write for the renin, Gils Verne theatre. In 1857, he married Honorine Morel and took a job as a stockbroker. In 1863, his first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was published. t was a great success and made him rich. Verne wrote many other adventure books such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days and From the Earth to the Moon. Jules Verne died in Amiens, France on 24 March, 1905. Jour to the Centre of : Earth Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a classic adventure story, which was first published in 1864. The story begins when Professor Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a strange note in an old book. This note leads them to Iceland, where they set off on a dangerous journey with many exciting adventures. Journey to the Centre of the Earth was an instant success. It caught the public's imagination and renewed an interest in the world of dinosaurs and prehistoric man. There are many different film, television and animated versions of Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It has been translated into many languages and remains one of Jules Vernes most successful and popular stories. The Plot Professor Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a mysterious message from explorer Arne Saknussemm in an old book. The message tells of a way to get to the centre of the Earth through a voleano in Iceland. The Professor, Axel and their guide Hans set off on an amazing journey. They have many adventures along the way and even see prehistoric monsters. But will they find the centre of the Earth? Professor Otto Lidenbrock is an intelligent but impatient Axel man who is determined to follow Arne Saknussemm’s route and find the centre of the Earth. is Professor Lidenbrock’s nephew and assistant. He does not really want to go on the journey, but he goes so he can marry the girl he loves, Grauben, when he A returns. < Hans is a brave Icelandic hunter who is the guide on the journey. He isa strong and clever man who does not speak very much. He helps the Professor and Axel get out of dangerous situations many times during their ~ journey. Grauben is Axel’s fiancée and the Professor's ward. She is an intelligent and serious girl. She tells Axel to go on the trip even though she will worry about him and miss him while he is away. Mr Fridrikssen is a friend and colleague of Professor . Lidenbrock.
