Safety Precautions
Follow all normal lab safety rules In addition, take the following safety precautions:
• Wear goggles and chemical-resistant gloves as needed and a laboratory gown is required inside the
laboratory.
• Use caution when working with acids because they can burn skin.
• Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the laboratory.
Procedure:
Station 1
3. Heat the Erlenmeyer flask w/ balloon over the alcohol lamp/Bunsen burner in an iron stand
with wire gauze.

4. Measure the circumference of the balloon as soon as the balloon begins to swell and be
filled with air.
Initial reading 1 2 3 4 5

Station 2
2. Record the pressure Readings as you move the volume of the syringe from 10,20, 30, 40,
and 50 ml.
Volume 10 ml 20 ml 30 ml 40 ml 50 ml

Station 3
1. Label the ends of a 1 ft. long glass tubing with NH₃ and HCl respectively.
2. Insert on the side labelled with NH₃ a cotton plug wet(not dripping) with 0.1 M NH₃ and
a cotton plug wet(not dripping) with 0.1 M HCl on the side labelled with HCl.
3. Measure the distance travelled by each gas using a ruler. (A white ring will form
between each gas.
Station 4
2
3. As soon as steam comes out of the soda can, grab the can using a tong and place it upside
down in a bowl of cold water.
Station 5.
1. Blow a balloon.
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the soda can when submerged in cold water? What do you think happened
to the gas molecules when the soda can was heated? When the soda can was submerged in cold
water?
2. What happens to the balloon as the flask is being heated? What gas law explains your
observation?
3. What is the relationship between volume and pressure based on your observations in activity 2?
What gas law applies to your observation?
4. Which gas travels faster in station 3? Why do you think so? Which gas law pertains to your
observation?
5. Plot a graph showing the relationships in the values you obtained in stations 1 and 2
3
6. What happened to the circumference of the balloon after placing it inside the freezer for 30
minutes? Why?
