History of Lodging
Hotel
– derived from french hotel which refers to a french version of the town house
– Used for the first time by the fifth duke of devonshire to name a lodging property in london
sometime in AD 1760
– Hostel - a place to stay for travelers
– Defined by british law where bonafide travelers can receive food or shelter
– Usually owned by corporation
– Large investment
– Costs on building, manpower
– Must provide food and beverage and lodging
– people are traveling barefooted, primitive

Ancient times
– Greeks developed thermal baths
– People can be cured only through baths
– Therapeutic bath

– Fine dining, entertainment and luxurious accommodation

Industrial revolution
– Machines are remarkable
– Development of modern transportation systems, facilitating mass travel
– Led to the rise of grand hotels in major cities and tourist destinations, catering to a
growing middle class of travelers
