Three Phases of Matter

SOLID LIQUID GAS

Characteristics of a SOLID
1. Definite shape
2. Definite size
3. Definite mass
4. Not free to move around, stays
put when placed on a surface
5. Will turn to a liquid if warmed
6. Atoms are fastened together
in regular spots, not able to
move around due to being
fastened tightly together
7. Atoms of solids can only
vibrate around one position

Characteristics of a LIQUID
1. Definite volume
2. Indefinite shape
3. Flow easily
4. Definite mass
5. Have a flat-topped surface
6. Will turn to gas when heated
7. Will turn to solid when cooled
8. Particles are close together with
no regular arrangement
9. Particles vibrate, move about,
and slide past each other

Characteristics of a GAS
1. Definite volume
2. Indefinite shape
3. Take the shape and volume of container
4. Can be compressed or dispersed
5. Has mass
6. Low density
7. Unrestricted movement
8. Particles vibrate rapidly
9. Particles are very far apart with no forces
holding them together

STATES OF MATTER VOCABULARY
These vocabulary cards can be used in several different ways.
1. Keep as whole pages for a science reference notebook
2. Cut on dotted lines and fold both ends inward to create a
flashcard with the large word on the front and the image/small
words on the back. Laminate or tape these closed.
3. Cut out all cards – large word, image, small words – and use for
matching.

Particles are packed tightly

SOLID together and are fastened

together in regular spots, not
able to move around.

Particles are close together

LIQUID
with no regular arrangement.
Particles vibrate, move about,
and slide past each other.

Particles are very far apart

GAS with no forces holding them

together. They vibrate rapidly
with unrestricted movement.

(gas).

CONDENSATION
A change in phase from a
vapor (gas) to a liquid.

MELTING
A change in phase from
a solid to a liquid.

FREEZING A change in phase from a

liquid to a solid.

When a solid changes to a

SUBLIMATION vapor without passing
through the liquid phase.

DEPOSITION
When a vapor (gas)
changes directly to a solid.
