The diagram below shows one phase of a three-phase busbar with a capacity of 1000 𝑀𝑊 at 220 𝑘𝑉.
i. Calculate the value of the CT ratios for all lines assuming 1-𝐴 CT secondary currents. Available CT
primary ratings increase in steps of 500 𝐴. There is no need to take any overload into account.
ii. Annotate the diagram with current directions and magnitudes in the main lines, the CT secondaries,
the pilot wires, and the OC relay; when line 𝐴 and 𝐶 are each injecting half of the rated currents
into the busbar and line 𝐵 is taking this current out of the busbar.

Hints:
Line currents can be calculated using the equation: 𝑆 = √3𝑉𝑙 𝐼𝑙
Where 𝑆 = the rated MVA capacity, 𝑉𝑙 = the line-to-line voltage, and 𝐼𝑙 = the line current.

Solution:
i.
𝑆 1000𝑀
The rated line current is= 𝐼𝑙 = = = 2624 𝐴
√3𝑉𝑙 √3∗220𝑘
The CT ratio for all the CTs is = 𝐶𝑇 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 = 3000/1 𝐴
ii.
For the given loading conditions:
2624
CT primary currents in line 𝐴 and 𝐶 are both = 2 = 1312 𝐴
CT primary current in line 𝐵 = 2624 𝐴
2624
CT secondary currents in line 𝐴 and 𝐶 are both= 2∗3000 = 0.4373 𝐴
2624
CT secondary current in line 𝐵 is = = 0.8746 𝐴
3000
The diagram is redrawn below with the required annotations.
