Lesson 2. Comparing Values of Different Denominations of Coins and Paper

Bills Through PhP100 Using Relation Symbol ( >, <, = )

B How do we compare values of different denominations of coins and

paper bills through PhP100?
A
We compare values of corresponding coins and bills by using relation symbols =, <,
and
> (equal, less than, and greater than)
Different denominations have different values.
We use the PhP and Ȼ signs in expressing Philippine Money. The symbol for
Philippine peso is PhP. It is read as peso. The symbol for centavo is Ȼ. It is read as

5

centavo. We can read money values in symbols. The period between the amount in
pesos and the amount in centavos is read as “and”.
Our coins differ in size and value. The smallest value is one centavo coin, while
the greatest is the ten peso coin. Our paper bills also vary in value, color and serial
number. The smallest value in paper bill is twenty peso bill and the greatest value is
the one thousand peso bill.

EXAMPLE

Richard spends PhP50 to buy

marbles. Raymond spends
PhP20 to buy marbles. Each
marble costs PhP2. How
many marbles did Richard
buy? How about Raymond?

Question:
1. Who bought more marbles?
2. Who bought less marbles?
3. How many marbles did Richard buy?
4. Why do we need to spend money wisely?

Example 2:

A B

a. is greater than
PhP20 > PhP10

b. is less than
PhP10 < PhP20

c. is equal to

PhP10 = PhP5 + PhP5

d. is greater than

PhP20 > PhP5 + PhP5
