1. How does an artisan or artisan be of great help in our present society?
An artist or artisan can be of significant service in today's society by doing what they do best:
making art. Art is a means of expression, and many important matters can be incorporated into it
to advocate or send a message. An artisan's work is incredibly very purposeful because they learn
a skill or a talent and then spend hours improving it and spreading it in society, which can add to
the aesthetics that surrounds us. According to Artwork Archive, creative thinkers and makers
bring joy, engagement, and motivation to their communities, but at the same time, they also
provide intelligent critique to our political, economic, and social institutions, encouraging
societies to connect meaningfully and make strides toward social development. Their creations
may also cause a shift in perspective. A point of view that can alter one's perspective, leading to
not only a different way of thinking but also a reflection on how we live and treat one another in
our communities. Artists or artisans have the ability to promote our culture in several creative
ways and with that, we are represented as one whole society aiming for progress.
2. Choose one of the National Artist Awardees. Select and research one of his /her artworks
which you think have influenced or contributed much in the country.
Leandro V. Locsin is an established Filipino architect, artist, and interior designer. He is known
for his use of concrete, floating volume, and simplistic design in most of his projects. In 1990,
late former President Corazon C. Aquino recognized him as a National Artist of the Philippines
for Architecture. Mr. Locsin designed many modern structures that incorporate Southeast Asia's
climatic qualities as well as the traditional architecture of the Philippines. His achievements
made contributed significantly to the development of Asian architectural culture. The architect
practically designed Makati City because he was hired to construct the majority of the buildings
there, including Ayala Building 1, Commercial Credit Corporation Building, J.M. Tuason
Building, Ayala Museum, Ayala Triangle Tower One, Philippine Stock Exchange Plaza, and
even the Ayala Avenue Pedestrianization Underpass. But one of his most remarkable cultural
contributions was the 88-hectare Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex located
along Roxas Boulevard in Metro Manila, Philippines. It consists of several buildings, including
the Folk Arts Theater, Coconut Palace, Film Center, and Philippine International Convention
Center. These structures were built by Leandro Locsin and have his trademark floating effect.
The CCP Complex is also coated in concrete with crushed seashells and marble textures.
Considering that it was established for the sole purpose of preserving, promoting, and developing
the arts and culture of the Philippines, Locsin's work was truly memorable.

3. Adding to the list of artisans and artists, who would you like to be included? State your
reasons why?
There was this Blogspot I came across which was dedicated to giving recognition to Filipino
artists. Particularly artists who are deemed worthy by the authors who haven't been given awards
or distinctions for proper recognition. And one artist I would like to add is Justino “Amang
Paloy” Cagayat Jr., a well-known sculptor in Paete, Laguna. In addition, Paete is also the
Carving Capital of the Philippines. Being a third of his generation, he followed their tradition by
constructing numerous woodwork masterpieces, most of which are religious figures due to the
large demand from the country's Roman Catholic population. His type of carving is wood
carving and most of his contributions are wooden sculptures. His works are not just found inside
the Philippines but also overseas. Aside from religious figures, he also has this one art piece that
was inspired by the movie "Machete", and is displayed in the Pambansang Museo ng Pelikula.
He was already known in Paete, Laguna when he gained fame after sculpting this piece. Paloy
Cagayat Jr., an accomplished craftsman, should be recognized for his commitment to promoting
and teaching his expertise in woodcarving to the kids.
