CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND

STUDIES

I. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Tourism is defined as the activities of persons identified as visitors. A visitor is

someone who is making a visit to a main destination outside his/her usual environment

for less than a year for any main purpose including holidays, leisure and recreation,

business, health, education or other purposes. Tourism was described to be the most

efficient industry all over the world. As it contributes to the balance of payment, it also

regulates the economical rate of each country because of the rapid growth of tourism

sector in the government. Aside from that, tourism is a big help to other sectors of the

government for it assists other industry and help them grow more to present country’s

beauty and potentiality. In accordance to this study, the researchers found other

references that will prove how good it is to take the best and more suitable profession for

everyone who are acquiring a successful career path for the future which also can be

tourism course that possesses good practice of hospitality and more advance career

platform, but with different factors to be consider and to look in to.

According to Sharma (2007), a better knowledge and characteristic is a big edge

for a student acquiring a better and more advance career platforms. This study includes

9
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

three (3) guidelines which is the personality, challenges and recognition, or in other

words it is the interpersonal attitude of an individual that is functioning at its own

perception. Sharma is explaining that an individual must first understand their own

persona, before they could be able to decide for their future plans. Aside from that an

individual must a line oneself to a right accordance of their own characteristics including

perseverance. It was also proven that a good attitude and perseverance of a person must

be seen throughout a journey by Mayo (2003), individual’s career choice development is

influenced by their work value. This study indicates career choice of a person influenced

by their beliefs, ideas, and core principles. In order to make a career choice you need to

explore and expand your knowledge. Aside from that, Andreea Nicoleta Stefanescu (July

2012) stated that according to most literature and previous studies, hospitality professions

affirm that the said professions is providing limited opportunities for participation and

development. The negative general perception of hospitality professions can reduce

competitiveness among (aspirant) employees. Low competitiveness may further increase

the number of unskilled employees attracted to and hired by the industry (Commission of

the European Communities, 2001). This study has revealed the situation of hospitality

professions. It just proven that not all of people has given a chance to be a successful in

tourism industry. It takes a long time, experience, and development before you can taste

the success. Lack of education and other important factors is the main reason, also we

need to consider the economic factors. This was the reason why there are employees that

unskilled. This may also affect the competitiveness of a country to build a good image

10
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

and also the growth drivers in the journey to success. But many researchers claimed that

tourism profession is one of the best career platform especially nowadays, with its vision

to prosper itself and other governmental sectors, it boosted more and more than everyone

could expected. Kipkosgei Bitok (2014) was one of the researchers from Kenya who

proved that tourism profession gives a lot of credits to anyone that tries and at the same

time perform the whole curriculum. According to him tourism was considered to have a

better platform for income and foreign money exchange due to its vast connection

towards another form of industry that created a various operations to be offered to tourists

that led foreign visitors to invest more on particular sectors that are also related to

tourism industry. This field (tourism) open more job opportunities for the upcoming

successors or the students that are currently in the tourism track. Because of this situation,

many universities in Kenya give their best to mold students on the hospitality and tourism

management to support the rapid growth of Tourism industry of the country. This study

includes the thought that tourism became one of the most sought-after industry all over

Kenya by both foreign and local people. Because of the ability and capacity of tourism

industry to share its characteristic to other sector, it becomes more reliable for

international visitors to expand their investments on the said country (Kenya). Aside from

that, more job opportunities were given to the people of Kenya (Kenyan) that made more

universities in their country to create and raise more tourism and hospitality students to

fill the open slots given by their government that will create a more advance growth of

tourism industry on their country. Lyceum of the Philippines which is known to have a

good source of practice for the tourism and hospitality management conducted a research

through the following researchers (Malubay, Gia Janine J.,Mercado, Kimberly Anne O

and Macasaet, Emeliza). The study stated they, making a decision in choosing course for

college is a difficult thing that every student encounter when they graduated as a senior

high school. Since it is the basis of their occupation that they intended to pursue in the

future. This study can help freshmen student who are pursuing Hospitality and Tourism

programs in LPU–L to further understand the factors can affect their future decisions.

Specifically, this paper aims to know the demographic profile of the chosen respondents,

the intention of this study is to determine if there are significant relationship in

demographic profile and the factors, that can affect in decision making of a freshmen

students. Also, we need to consider the economic factor which is the job demand that will

help you to think deeply if the Hospitality and Tourism course is the right course that

gives you a good job soon. It can be related also to age and social factors, and nationality

and economic factors that is the important factors to be considered when you want to

pursue the said course. Education is one of the important thing to be successful in life.

This study is all about information in hospitality and tourism course it focuses to the

factors affecting in decision making of freshmen student. It aims to know if there are such

significant factor in taking the said course. It also has connection to your career. It will be

accurate if your occupation is related to the course you've been graduated, and the other

factors that are significant and need to consider is economic factor, age, social and

nationality factors so it's better to deeply understand, knowledgeable and think surely

II. SYNTHESES

Tourism is currently one of the largest and most dynamically developing sectors of

the world. Tourism has an extremely important role in the economy. In this dilemma, the

researchers strive enough to find out the effects of tourism industry and its dynamic phase

to themselves that are also in line with the said industry. This research aims to analyse

complex ideas that occurs between the tourism industry and the certain factors to be

consider, aside from that, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of tourism

industry to the chosen respondents claimed by the researchers. All in all, these studies

show how well-developed tourism career is and its ability to change the perspective of

the students regarding their chosen career path. To be part of this industry is a big

opportunity and at the same time risk because of its dynamic phase in the economy.

Inside the research, factors to be observe and look out for are stated that allow everyone

to see and understand the importance of choosing a better and more advance career

III. HYPOTHESES

In this research, there is no particular significance between the stated factors and the

rate value of the perceptions of the chosen respondents. Tourism course might have a big

advantages compared to other courses, however, this research is tested with different

coined ideas and factors to further analyse, explain and critically examine the real

perspective of every single students currently in line with the said course. Tourism is

great not just for the travellers, but also for our economy. Primarily, it is a good source of

income. To further substantiate the context of the result the researchers consolidate a null

hypothesis reflecting their assumptions for this study. The possible outcome of this

research might fall under agree that it means that tourism course is favourable for Grade

12 student as their college degree the factors that indicated in questionnaire is suited to

the capabilities and similar to the characteristics of tourism possess, the different factors

and additional questions that can put respondents mind into some ideas that must analyze

Statistical Treatment

To interpret the date effectively, the researcher will employ the following statistical

treatment. The Percentage, Weighted Mean, Sample Variance, Sample Standard

Deviation, Pearson-r, Spearman- rho, Chi Square are the tools use to interpret data.

1. Percentage

This will employ to determine the frequency counts and percentage distribution

of personal related variables of the respondents.

Formula: % =

n x 100

Where:

% is the percentage

F is the Frequency

N is the total number of respondents

100 is a constant value.

2. Average Weighted Mean

This will be use to determine the assessment of the respondents with regards to

their personal profiles.

Formula: x̅ = ∑ fx
n

Where:

X̅ is the weighted mean

F is the frequency

X is the weight of each item

N is the number of cases

3. Measures of Standard Deviation and Variance

It deals with how the data are closely concentrated or how the data are being spread or

distributed.

 Sample Variance

Sum of the squared deviation of each data from the sample mean divided by n-1. It is the

inclusive form of the range that is why it is often associated with one another.

28

Summary of the Findings

This study entitled “Perception on the Factors of the rate value of Tourism

Management Course for selected Senior High School Grade12 tourism students of

Philippine Christian University S.Y. 2018-2019. These days most of the students have a

hard time choosing their course for the upcoming college, if the students are going to

continue their startups track regards to whether they can be in college - going course or

not. That's why the researchers wanted to conduct a study regarding on the perception of

the selected senior high school grade 12th tourism students on the factors of the rate

value of Tourism Management. The aims of this study is to analyze the real intentions of

a student currently in line with the tourism industry and knowing the different

perspectives of the chosen respondents regarding the given factors and consequences.

The researchers conducted a survey to the selected Tourism grade 12 students. There are

24 female respondents and 4 male respondents with the total number of 30 respondents.

The result of this study could be beneficial to the following: Tourism Students, Parents,

64
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

Philippine Christian University Campus, Researcher and also the Future researcher. This

study serve as their guidelines source in conducting a research that are related to the

topic.

As the researchers conducted this survey, they had observed that tourism course is

favorable for students to pursue it until college and we determine that the most students

want to continue this course are female, also the parents of the students will help and

support them on thie said course, lastly it is suits to their capabilities, skills, and

characteristics that tourism posses.

CONCLUSIONS

The researchers believe that tourism course have different factors that can affect

the perception of Grade 12 tourism students. Most of the respondents answered that they

are about to pursue tourism course as a college degree despite of all the factors that

possible become a hindrances to them to change their perception and decisions in

choosing a right course for them. The most encountered factors of the students faced is

related to the financial support of parents of student who are currently taking up tourism

course. While the other factor is all about the characteristics that tourism possess to be

able to have an advance career platform. Given these results, we can further say that

tourism course is still an in demand, despite of all the factors that might encounter. In

addition, this research study accept the null hypothesis for the chi-square testing which

states that there are no significant relationship between the observed and expected

frequencies. As the results suggest, students always think deeply in choosing a right

course that fit to the ability that they have.
