Lesson Idea Name: Identifying Rocks

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd Grade

Content Standard Addressed: (List the number and the verbiage for the standard.)
S3E1.a Ask questions and analyze data to classify rocks by their physical attributes (color, texture,
luster, and hardness) using simple tests.

1.1c Feedback to Improve Practice
Students use technology to seek feedback that informs
and improves their practice and to demonstrate their
learning in a variety of ways.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? (Add 1 to 2 sentences stating the learning
outcome you would expect students to achieve using the technology tool selected. This goal will be
shared with students so make it clear, concise, and kid-friendly.)

I would like students to use the resources on Padlet to learn about and identify the different kinds of
rocks.

I can identify rocks by observing their physical traits.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the

school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

TW will introduce students to the Padlet by sharing the link with them and talking through the
expectations, goals, and instructions for the lesson. SW explore the Padlet by interacting with every
resource and taking notes in order to facilitate their own learning. I have provided them with lots or
online word and picture materials, as well as a small amount of audio in order to help everyone
learn. If I wanted to make it even more engaging for the students, I would like to bring in the
different kinds of rocks for them to look at and touch as they are learning. They will write their
findings in the Padlet and there are assessments on there that would test what they have learned,
especially at the end using Quizizz. Science has a lot of opportunity for real world tasks, as we see
rocks every day and can better work towards understanding how they all are made. The Quizizz will
be their concluding lesson, however it should also be a fun and engaging activity for the students
.
Managing student learning:

I think the idea of them being able to share their thoughts all on one platform will encourage them
to talk to each other about their findings, and even more so if I brought in actual rocks, or had them
work together on the assessments. The lesson is supposed to take around 30 minutes, so I would
alot that time and tell them that, and then check in with them on occasion to see if we need more or
less time. I would encourage them that even if they take notes on separate devices, to speak to each
other about what they found while exploring.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I have provided a lot of materials for the students to look at. They don’t have to do all of them in
order, but it is recommended that they do. I put a two-minute film that they can watch at the
beginning or end, however if I put it as a BrainPop link it would be an assessment, so I found a link to
it without the assessment. The students have the ability to write or speak their answers for portion
of the activity. If I were able to bring rocks in, feeling them and recognizing their textures would also
help them learn a lot since they can actually see and observe the rock.
Reflective Practice:

I think that this would help introduce or solidify a topic to them, but I think it helps to be hands-on
with science. I did provide what materials I knew how and put them into the Padlet though. I would
love to incorporate technology and concrete materials together, so that way they can explore more
about the Earth by holding pieces of it instead of just reading and watching. But overall, I think the
Padlet I have created will help get the lesson done and for students to meet their goal while having
some fun. I think I look forward to doing the Quizizz the most, because that is personally my favorite
part, but I know that students love competition as well.
