Unit I

Newtonian Mechanics
Tutorial Problems / Assignments
Tutorial I :Problems
1. If a=4 i−3 j , b=8 i−6 j, find the magnitude and direction of (i) a+ b and (ii) a−b .

2. Find the work done if the applied force is F=2 i− j−k and the displacement is given by

r =3i+2 j−5 k .

3. A bullet of mass 25 g moving with a velocity of 200 cm/s is stopped within 5 cm of the

target. Find the average resistance offered by the target.

4. A force acts for 10 seconds on a body of mass 100 kg after which the force ceases to act

and the body describes 160 m in the next 8 sec. Find the magnitude of the force.

Tutorial II :Problems

5. A body of mass 2 kg is acted upon by two forces each of magnitude 1 N, making an angle

of 60° with each other. Then find the net acceleration of the body.

6. Find the work done by a person in carrying a box weighing 30 kg over his head when he

travels 20 m in (i) on a plane ground (ii) vertically up.

7. A body of mass 100 g is allowed to fall freely under the action of gravity, what is its

kinetic energy (K.E) after 10 sec? (g = 1000 cm/s2)

8. A 0.1 kg body is suspended from a 0.15 m long weightless spring of force constant 100

N/m. After stretching it through 0.02 m the spring is released. Then, find the kinetic

energy of the body when the compression is 0.01 m.

Tutorial III :Problems

9. If the distance between the two spheres each of mass 2 kg is 30 cm, find the gravitational

force between them. G = 6.67 x 10–11Nm2/kg2.

10. Under the action of a force, a 2kg body moves such that its position x (in meters) as a

t
function of time (in sec) is given by x= . Find the work done by the force in the first

two seconds.
