EXPLOSION HAZARDOUS AREAS

Nuclear The easiest way of protection against explosions is to avoid using flammable
power plants
substances. However, in many industries the flammable substances are used
on daily basis without any alternative option. The flammable gases, mist,
vapours and dust clouds when combined with air can generate a mixture which
is often a potentially explosive. In such atmosphere, the use of mechanical and
electrical devices is a significant risk.

The generation of the potentially explosive mixtures cannot be avoided when it

is a result of the process itself. Therefore, the protection against explosions in
Pharma
industry Ex areas is focused on minimizing the ignition sources as hot surfaces,
mechanically and electrically generated sparks, electrostatic discharges and
stray electric currents.

PROTECTION OF EXPLOSION HAZARDOUS AREAS

Basically, 3 types of protection can be applied:
Primary explosion protection aims at substituting something else for the flammable
substances or the atmospheric oxygen or reducing their quantities to the point where there is
Centrale no danger of an explosive mixture forming.
nucleare

Secondary explosion protection. If, despite primary explosion protection measures, it is

possible for a hazardous, potentially explosive atmosphere to form (to a degree that requires
measures to protect employees against explosion hazards), the ignition of this hazardous,
potentially explosive atmosphere must be effectively prevented. All possible sources of ignition
are evaluated, and the appropriate protective measures applied.

Tertiary explosion protection. If the primary and secondary explosion protection

measures are not enough, additional protective measures must be taken. The purpose of
Industrie
these is to limit the impact of an explosion and/or to reduce it to a non-hazardous level
farmaceutică (pressure control opening valves etc.).

The fire protection products described here are secondary explosion protection
means, deterring the co-existence of the ignition sources with the explosion
hazardous atmosphere. They are certified in this respect.

EX PRODUCTS IN EUROPE

The ATEX European Directive (from French: “Atmosphère

explosible” – explosion hazardous atmosphere) has defined in
July 2003 a new classification of the hazadous areas, based on
the specific risk factor. The specific requirements must be
fullfilled by the equipment used there. This classification defines
the measures to be taken. The products presented are certified
according to the ATEX Directive.

In industrial facilities, the explosion hazardous atmosphere is

basically classified as Zone 1 and 2, as well as Zone 21 and 22.
The Zones 0 and 20 are exceptions.

EXPLOSION HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE

CLASSIFICATION, ACC. TO ATEX
The ATEX directive is covering explosions from gases but also solid dust (which, contrary to common
perception, can lead to hazardous explosions)

Hazard – Gas / vapour / mist

Zone 0 – A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form
of gas, vapour or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 1 – A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form
of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 2 – A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form
of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
Hazard – Powder / dust
Zone 20 – A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present
continuously, or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 21 – A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in
normal operation occasionally.
Zone 22 – A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur
in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.

ATEX PRODUCTS CERTIFICATION

8
8

WHY DO PRODUCTS NEED TO BE CERTIFIED?

Certifications show that a product conforms to all applicable standards.

For us, this means that our products are shown to be safe in the environments that we hope to use
them in e.g. Hazardous Areas, Marine, Mining

Reasons for certifications:

• We do not want our products to be the cause of an accident.

• Without certifications, customers will not buy our products.

• Certifications are a mark of quality

CE MARKING

CE Marking implies that the product complies with all applicable EU Directives

Our products typically have to comply with the following Directives

• CPD – Construction Products Directive

• ATEX – Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres
• EMC - Electromagnetic Compatibility
• R&TTE (soon to be RED) – Radio Equipment
• RoHS – Restriction of Harmful Substances
• LVD – Low Voltage Directive
• REACh – Registration & Evaluation of Chemicals

• The EU Declaration of Performance supports the CE marking and is a legal document – our products
cannot be sold in Europe without a CE mark or EU DoP.

CERTIFICATION SCHEMES - ATEX

• ATEX product certification (or EU Type Examination) is an investigation on the design of a
product in relation to a series of relevant standards laid out under the directive.

• It involves a detailed process of examination, testing and assessment of equipment intended for
use in potentially hazardous areas, with the end result being the issue of an ATEX certificate and
report, confirming and demonstrating that the product is safe to use (within certain parameters)
within potentially explosive atmospheres.

• The certification process must be undertaken by a Notified Body (e.g. Baseefa) who issue ATEX
certificates and conduct periodic surveillance of quality management systems.

CERTIFICATION SCHEMES - IECEX

• IECEx is the future route to global compliance certification.

• Its aim is to harmonize standards to allow free movement of goods by establishing a world-wide
accepted standard – one product assessment using harmonized standards

• The IECEx scheme significantly reduces the need for re-testing and certification by conforming to
international IEC standards, and therefore makes international trade easier, quicker and more cost
• effective.

• Under the terms of the IECEx Scheme, a Quality Assessment Report (QAR) is also required, which
involves a site audit every eighteen months to examine quality management procedures.

• Many countries are now accepting IECEx certificate for local certifications e.g. Russia, Australia, Korea.

12

13

CERTIFICATION SCHEMES – FM / UL / CSA

• For the US & Canada there are a number of certification schemes available, demonstrating that the
applicable requirements are fulfilled

• A mark such as cULus means the product meets both the US and Canadian requirements, therefore
multiple listings to each of UL, FM and CSA are not required.

• Standards can be slightly different in the US and Canada, however there are moves to align with the
IECEx scheme.

EQUIPMENT CATEGORIES

II 2 G EEx d IIC T4 Gb
The equipment category enables selection of equipment based on the probability of an explosive gas mixture
being present

• Category 1 = Zone 0 = Explosive Gas always present (e.g. > 1000 hr)

• Category 2 = Zone 1 = Explosive Gas expected to be present, but not continuously (e.g. 10 > 1000 hr / yr)

• Category 3 = Zone 2 = Explosive Gas unlikely to be present and for short durations (e.g. < 10 hr /yr)

The number of hours per year is only a guideline and the zoning should be decided depending on the location.

INSTALLATION IN INDUSTRIAL
ENVIRONMENT WITH HIGH LEVEL OF EM
PERTURBATION

94

95

VULNERABILITY AT HIGH LEVELS OF THE EM

PERTURBATION (IQ8QUAD)
• Most vulnerable: O2T (3 sensors)

• Typical situation: at each couple of days a contamination fault is reported (actually a higher current read by
each sensor). Sometimes an alarm can also be reported (together with the fault signal!).
E.g.: fauilt 007 (contamination with dark particles), contamination level 100%

• OT: usually, no faults are reported, but deceptive alarms are more frequent in such situations!

Case study:

96

HOW CAN A HIGHER LEVEL OF EM

PERTURBATION BE DETECTED
• Functioning hours vs. contamination level
• Measuring the sensor values
Typical reading under EM perturbations influence:

POSSIBLE SOUTION FOR HIGH LEVEL OF EM

PERTURBATIONS
• Correct connection of the cable shield (general ESSER requirement)!!!
• Change the detector sitting (90% not feasible)
• Using the EM protection piece 805560 in the detector base
