INTERNATIONAL
COLLEGE

Underwood International College (UIC) is a highly selective, English-language,

four-year liberal arts institution, which combines the intimate, elite learning

environment of an American-style liberal arts college with the faculty and resources

of Korea’s top private research university. UIC students choose from an extensive

list of classes conducted entirely in English and taught by a distinguished group

of international and Korean scholars. With a student body drawn from around the
world, UIC focuses on ensuring that its outstanding students have the intellectual

foundation to become exceptional leaders capable of changing the world for the

better.

The key to UIC is its distinctive organization. Rather than segregating professors

into separate departments, divided across disciplinary lines, UIC encourages vibrant

intellectual exchange by bringing scholars and students from different fields

together into one program. The faculty of the Common Curriculum, which is composed of

international scholars recruited from prestigious universities throughout the world,

offers interdisciplinary courses designed to help students navigate the complex

intellectual landscape of the modern world.

GLOBAL
CAREER
TOUR

Underwood International College (UIC) has organized Global Career Tours since the

spring of 2008. These subsidized overseas trips provide students with opportunities

to visit various international organizations, companies and schools in order to gain

exposure to real-world experience. Since the spring of 2008, the tour has been held

nearly every semester to destinations including Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, New York

and Singapore.

Global Career Tour reflects UIC’s vision of educating Global Leaders who have the

skills and knowledge to be successful anywhere in the world. Reading about global

careers is different from witnessing first-hand what it takes to become successful in

the business world. At each company visit, representatives introduce their companies

and explain their job recruitment process. Many of the companies also introduce UIC

students to young working professionals from various career tracks and allow them to

hear about what it is like to work for some of the top companies. UIC’s Global Career

Tours offer an ideal way for UIC students to plan their future careers and learn

invaluable information about the world beyond their college years.

MESSAGE FROM PROFESSORS
This year we were fortunate to have had the
DEAN OF UIC
opportunity to conduct the first global career tour
in the field of science within Korea. I would like
to thank Professor Yoonjung Jang for organizing
the tour program, and Professor Hyunsang Kim and
Professor Sunglan Chung for touring with us. I
accompanied our students on the first day of the
PROFESSOR career tour and was impressed with the level of
HELEN engagement they exhibited throughout the visits.
J.S.LEE Students were tirelessly active and engaging during
lectures and discussions, showing their enthusiasm
for scientific research and the fast-changing
landscape of technology. The tour was inspiring and
energizing, especially because of its timing—it was
the first in-person global career tour after twoand-
half years of social distancing. We were just
grateful to have completed the tour safely, in spite
of heavy rainstorms and the ever-present specter
of possible infection. I sincerely hope that we
continue to build upon our hallmark programs like as
the Career Tour; programs that inspire our students
to dream big.

Students often ask me what they should do to make

DIRECTOR OF UIC CDC
the most out of a UIC education. I, as a UIC
academic advisor, usually tell them to participate
in the programs that are only available to UIC
students because they are what distinguishes UIC
from other colleges. In this sense, the UIC Global
Career Tour program is a must-do program for UIC
PROFESSOR students. After a two-year-long involuntary hiatus,
HYUNSANG UIC finally provided the program again with slight
KIM modifications. Although there was no overseas trip,
students were invited to observe labs with state-
ofthe-art facilities and had engaging conversations
with industry professionals. It was very delightful
to see students so intrigued and engaged. I incerely
thank all who made this program possible, including
Professor Jang, and the students who stayed highly
motivated throughout the program. I look forward to
going abroad with students for the UIC Global Career
Tour program next year.

opportunities and knowing how to prepare yourself
for such jobs can be confusing and difficult. One
large obstacle is the fact that there is not much
information about what kind of opportunities are
available, and even with such information, it is not
easy to make important decisions largely because
PROFESSOR it is quite hard to imagine how life will change
SUNGLAN once you leave the campus. The Global Career Tour
CHUNG this year indeed gave students the answers they
truly needed to help plan out and prepare for the
future. It was not only fun and interesting but also
very helpful as an educator as well as I learned
various facts about job searching and life in the
bio industry that I was not aware of before. I
thank Dean Helen Lee and Professor Yoonjung Jang
for providing such a precious opportunity to the
students and hope more students will be able to take
part in this wonderful event in the future.

It was the first time that the 2022 UIC Global

Career Tour was held during the adverse conditions
of the pandemic. I am so grateful to all the
students who for their full participation uring
the three-day journey. It was a rare opportunity
of practical value for students planning a career
in the science and engineering fields. I was able
PROFESSOR to see the enthusiasm of the students in seeking
YOONJUNG answers to their questions from experts about their
JANG fields of interest. I hope that many UIC students
who are passionate about career exploration can join
us on the next UIC Global Career Tour program.

INSTITUT PASTEUR KOREA

INTRODUCTION
PASTEUR NETWORK AND INSTITUT PASTEUR KOREA
Institut Pasteur first opened in Paris, France and was named after its founder Louis

Pasteur, who remained as the director of the institution until he died at the age

of 72. Ever since its opening in 1888, Institut Pasteur has been conducting various

medical research activities under four core missions: Research, Education, Health

and Innovation. Institut Pasteur is the realization of the humanist ideals of Louis

Pasteur – that scientific breakthroughs should benefit people’s health worldwide.

Today, his ideals are alive in the hearts of researchers battling infectious diseases

worldwide. Institut Pasteur is a multinational research institution expanding over

the globe, with a research network of 33 member institutions over 24 countries.

Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) was established in 2004 in collaboration with Institut

Pasteur Paris and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), supported

by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT). As a member of the Pasteur Network,

IPK contributes to the betterment of public health by conducting basic science

research including infectious disease and by developing applied technologies through

translational research. These research data and platforms are made available

to domestic biomedical communities, ultimately contributing to the increased

preparedness against emerging infectious diseases.

12 | 13

ORGANIZATION AND VISION

IPK is made up of three research divisions closely related to the flow of the

research activities conduced in the institution. The Discovery Biology Division

focuses on the basics of infectious diseases, such as the mechanism of action of

viruses and drug candidates. These data are handed over to the Translational Research

Division where drug efficacy of the candidate materials is tested through High-

throughput Screening based on IPK’s core technology platform, Phenomic Screening™.

The “Hit” or “Lead Compound”, a drug candidate with an efficacy of 90% and above,

identified during this process is further developed for clinical use by partnering

with the biomedical industry. The research infrastructure center in charge of the

biobank collects and provides resources of 500,000 chemical libraries.

Currently, the vision of IPK is to become a research hub in infectious disease in the

Asia-Pacific region. Along with efforts to make connections internationally, IPK also

pursues a commercial partnership with other industries, universities and institutes

not only for research collaboration but also to implement preclinical and clinical

trials to test new drugs.

INSTITUT PASTEUR KOREA

VISIT TO INSTITUT PASTEUR KOREA

The 18th GCT was held face-to-face in preparation for the upcoming post-COVID-19 era

and we started our company tour in a gloomy, rainy weather. The first institution

we visited was Institut Pasteur Korea, located in Pangyo. The institute is a five-

story building, and other bio-venture companies supported by the bio-core facility

construction project of IPK were also located in the same building.

We were first guided to the auditorium for an introduction to IPK. The lecturer

presented about its history and purpose of establishment. She emphasized that to

respond to pandemics like COVID-19 efficiently, cooperation from multiple departments

is required and complex procedures must be taken to develop new drug candidate

materials.

Then we moved to the fifth floor to look around the laboratory. We visited the

Translational Research Division facility involved in the process of developing new

drugs. This facility operates a state-of-the-art, fully automated drug screening

platform capable of HTS/HCS (high-throughput screening/high-content screening)

platform for screening. We were able to observe research instruments rarely seen

in university labs as David Shum, the Head of the Screening Discovery Platform

walked us through the drug screening platform procedures. He also took us to the

BSL-3 laboratory which is an antiviral drug evaluation center as well as the BSL-2

laboratory.

Q & A SESSION
During the last session of our tour, we had the chance to present our question to the

CEO and three of IPK’s lead scientists.

IS IT NECESSARY FOR ONE TO PURSUE A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN

PUBLIC HEALTH IN ORDER TO WORK IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SECTOR?
It is not a must to pursue a bachelor’s in public health. It is possible to join the

sector after pursuing a Master’s in Public Health as well.

HOW DID YOU NARROW DOWN YOUR SPECIFIC INTERESTS AMONG THE
VARIOUS FIELD OPTIONS WITHIN THE LIFE SCIENCES?
“Do not be afraid to try new things!” Finding your interest is a natural process, but

taking part in various internship programs as an undergraduate student can help you

find your interest.

Laboratory of
Medicinal Chemistry Division
INSTITUT PASTEUR KOREA 16

WOULD IT BE ADVISABLE FOR AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT IN THE

LIFE SCIENCE FIELD TO GO DIRECTLY INTO WORK INSTEAD OF GOING
TO GRAD SCHOOL TO FURTHER SPECIALIZE IN A SPECIFIC FIELD?
Pursuing a master's, or PhD if possible, is beneficial in the scientific field,

especially in the research area. It is possible to go directly to work upon receiving

a bachelor’s degree, but it is highly likely that one would only be limited to

assistant positions.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE LATE RESPONSE OF THE WORLD

HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) TO THE EBOLA OUTBREAK AND THE
CRITICISM THAT FOLLOWED, GIVEN YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE IN WHO?
Although WHO is one of the largest public health organizations, it still has its

limitations. In order to effectively control outbreaks or other public health

issues, an organization should have authority and be able to force restrictions, if

necessary. However, the WHO can only make suggestions. Moreover, WHO should overcome

its financial limitations to increase its capacities and influence.

ABL BIO

INTRODUCTION
ABL Bio is a biotech company established in 2016 that develops pharmaceuticals for

immuno-oncology and neurodegenerative diseases. Grabody is ABL Bio’s own bispecific

antibody platform that has been developed into several pipelines.

Grabody-T and Grabody-I are antibodies designed for immuno-oncology treatment,

and Grabody-B functions as treatment for neurodegenerative disease. The former

has high specificity for targeting tumor microenvironments. The latter contains a

BBB(blood-brain barrier) shuttle that allows therapeutic molecules to infiltrate the

troublesome impediment.

ABL Bio sells technology licenses to larger firms that test and commercialize the

platform. Since the company’s establishment, rapid progress has been marked by

continuous license deals with various global corporations including Boston-based

Compass Therapeutics, Seoul-based Yuhan and Beijing-based CStone Pharmaceuticals.

Most recently, ABL Bio was rewarded with a $75M exclusive collaboration and licenses

agreement deal by SANOFI. It was the largest up-front payment a Korean pharmaceutical

venture has ever received for a licensing deal, promising a bright future for ABL

Bio. ABL Bio aims to one day independently develop and distribute pharmaceuticals,

and create ‘A Better Life’, hence the acronym ABL.

VISIT TO ABL BIO

The best part about the global career tour was having the privilege to network

with experts in the industry. The tour in ABL bio was led by Weonkyoo You, the

head of R&D. Doctor You, a tech transfer and licensing expert, shared his stories

on developing bispecific antibody technology and licensing it out to SANOFI.

This was very interesting because the SANOFI deal was considered pivotal in the

biopharmaceutical industry in terms of contract size and business models. ABL

Bio proved that it was possible to support sustainable R&D purely with milestone

payments.

Company Introduction by
Weonkyoo You, Ph.D.,Head of R & D

After sharing his story, we had the opportunity to freely ask about career advice,

available opportunities, and the landscape of the industry. Doctor You mentioned

that life science majors with a bachelor's degree have many opportunities in the job

market as a technician or a salesperson. Applicants with a strong research background

may have an opportunity to participate in R&D. He added, however, that in order to

conduct research, applicants should have at least a master's degree, or preferably a

PhD.

During the tour around the company, we looked around the facility and observed the

daily routine and working environment of the employees. This invaluable experience

gave a clearer picture of what certain career paths look like and what to prepare as

an undergraduate.
ABL BIO

Q & A SESSION
GETTING A PHD IS A BIG INVESTMENT TO MAKE. WHAT WAS YOUR
MOTIVATION BEHIND GETTING A PHD IN IMMUNOLOGY?

While working for a few years in the industry, I realized that I needed a PhD in

order to have initiative, and decided to return to academia to get a PhD.

WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS SEEKING FOR A

POSITION IN R&D?

It is possible for an undergraduate to get a job in R&D if they have strong research

backgrounds, though the chances are very slim. In order to lead research, I advise

you to get at least a master’s degree.

MOST STUDENTS STRUGGLE WITH DECIDING WHETHER TO PURSUE

ACADEMIA OR INDUSTRY. LOOKING BACK, IS THERE A WAY OF
KNOWING WHICH CAREER PATH SUITS THE STUDENT?

This is a very personal issue that individuals experience differently. Students have

to go through trial-and-error and gradually find what works for them. The same goes

for the process of selecting a certain field in biology. Nobody knows, not even you,

unless you try.

IT SEEMS AS THOUGH ALL FIELDS OF SCIENCE ACCOMPANY A SENSE

OF UNCERTAINTY. HOW IS ABL BIO DEALING WITH SUCH ISSUES?

This is an important issue that we acknowledge. We must keep studying and

understanding novel researches while pursuing our own research.

IS THERE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BACHELOR’S DEGREE

AND HIGHER DEGREES IN TERMS OF ENTRY LEVEL JOBS? ALSO, WHAT
KIND OF POSITIONS ARE BACHELOR’S DEGREE EMPLOYEES IN ABL BIO
CURRENTLY PLACED IN?

Even for entry level jobs, it is customary to make up for the 5~6 additional years

required for a Doctor’s/Master’s degree. Ph.D graduates will most likely have a

leading position in the R&D sector. For Bachelor’s degree graduates, there aren’t

many positions open in the R&D sector. In ABL Bio, their main responsibilities are

limited to tech support.

THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC

INTRODUCTION
ThermoFisher is to scientists what Amazon.com is to us; it has everything. With more

than 40,000 products ranging from small laboratory equipment to large ones it is not

an exaggeration to say someone can shop out an entire laboratory from ThermoFisher

Scientific. As a matter of fact, one of the services the sales department provides is

making a recommendation of what combination of ThermoFisher Scientific products will

best suit the customer’s needs.

While large pharmaceutical companies such as Moderna and Pfizer are focused on

actually developing and selling drugs, ThermoFisher Scientific supplies the

pharmaceutical industry with the equipment and reagents required in the development

of those drugs. ThermoFisher Scientific is self-described as a “world leader in

serving science” and is integrative in nature. After all, it was the integration of

Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific that created ThermoFisher. It has six brands,

each of which specializes not only in laboratory instruments but also in customer

support, genomics, reagents, software and so forth.

Company Introduction by
Kuen-Juoon Park, Ph.D.,

24 | 25

For example, if you contact ThermoFisher Scientific to purchase products for a

research project, ThermoFisher Scientific will make recommendations for the lab

equipment, labware, reagents, software required for your research. In case you’re

new to the instrument, they provide customer training. If you wish to develop a new

procedure, lab support professionals will assist you in designing the experiment.

Laboratory Tour by
Kuen-Juoon Park, Ph.D.,
Lead Product Specialist

Although it is impossible to go into the details of ThermoFisher Scientific’s

enormously vast product lines, their products were behind the scenes in major news

headlines. For example, one piece of lab equipment called the real-time PCR, a key

equipment for DNA tests, was behind the identification of the real serial killer in

the Hwaseong serial murders, eventually proving that the man wrongfully arrested 30

years ago was in fact innocent.

Since its first launch in Korea 16 years ago, ThermoFisher Scientific has been

increasing its business activities in Korea to meet the demands of the rapidly

growing biomedical market.

THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC

VISIT TO THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC

ThermoFisher was the last stop on our first day. Our schedule had been slightly

delayed due to the unexpected weather, but we were greeted with a warm welcome into

the office by the ThermoFisher staff. Although the head office of the company is in

the United States, the employees in the South Korean branch communicate mainly in

Korean.

Introduction to Cell and Gene Therapy by

Kangwon Lee, Business Development Manager

In the information session with four different employees, we learned about the

company’s history, values, and fields of interest. The representatives were mostly

from the sales department, and they provided some insight and tips for students

searching for jobs. It is common for science students to not even consider doing

sales. However, we learned that sales in the biotech industry requires scientific

expertise to work with researchers, and is a field where science majors can excel

in. The employees also presented valuable information on the potential future of

the bio-market leading to the expansion of research in gene therapy, cell therapy,

and data science. Additional advice for achieving success in any position consisted

of two parts: being motivated to learn new information and finding opportunities to

gain experience. Overall, the representatives showed great pride and admiration for

ThermoFisher’s dedication to their customers throughout the information session.

26 | 27

Laboratory Tour

We were also given a brief tour by the employees around the workplace. It was

fascinating to see all the ThermoFisher instruments side by side as well as their

different models that had been developed over time. One of the most interesting

devices was the Polymerase Chain Reaction machine that has been designed by the

company and played a large role during the pandemic for COVID-19 testing.

ThermoFisher’s commitment to serving science and tirelessly innovating for a better

tomorrow had been quite evident during the tour through the employees’ passion for

their work

THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC

Q & A SESSION
After listening to the presentation from Mr. Park (Ph.D., Genetic Sciences Group) and

Mr. Lee (Business Development Manager, CGT), we were able to ask questions regarding

the marketing strategies the company pursues, as well as career advice.

HOW DOES THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC DIFFERENTIATE ITSELF

IN REFLECTING THE CURRENT MARKET TRENDS, AND WHAT
DIFFERENTIATES THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC KOREA FROM OFFICES IN
OTHER COUNTRIES, AS THERMOFISHER HAS OFFICES AND OPERATIONS
WORLDWIDE?

Let’s take a look at the different leading technologies of life science in markets

across Asia. Japan is leading the industry of CGT (Cell & Gene Therapy), while the

monoclonal antibody is the leading technology in Singapore and South Korea, and India

and China are made up of mostly classical pharmaceuticals (85~90%). The industry of

cell and gene therapy has not been yet fully developed in South Korea, which can

be seen in the fact that R&D regarding medicines utilizing CAR-T (chimeric antigen

receptor) still need more process. Each office of ThermoFisher Scientific develops

products in accordance with such circumstances of each country.

From the perspective of a job-searcher, when comparing branches of a company to

work for, it is important to consider the number of investments headquarters are

allocating to the specific branch. Another crucial factor is whether the branch

office is independent; has a self-built infrastructure and is not merely purposed to

aim for the local market. The number of available job openings can be an indicator.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON 'WHITE BIOLOGY'?

The ethical controversy regarding the conversion of food to fuel in terms of using

biofuels is still a problem to be solved. Also, research on topics such as plastic

decomposition using genetic engineering are still actively ongoing.

28 | 29

WHAT ARE THE CRUCIAL QUALITIES AND ASPECTS THE COMPANY WANTS
FOR EMPLOYMENT IN THE MARKETING FIELD?

Firstly, the ability to deal with customers is a MUST. The second requirement is

expert knowledge. This is because demonstration of products is a necessary step in

marketing for sales managers. At ThermoFisher Scientific, employees can receive

additional education regarding specialized knowledge at the working level; not

theoretical knowledge.

Another crucial quality is experience in laboratories which is considered practical

knowledge. Knowing how laboratories operate and how to handle different laboratory

tools are essential.

Aevis Bio is a pharmaceutical company that focuses on developing medicine for rare

diseases. Aevis Bio started off with a series A investment of 10 billion won. Since

then, their research has expanded from finding cures for neurodegenerative diseases

to oncology. Located at KRIBB, the Korean Research Institute of Bioscience and

Biotechnology, Aevis Bio specializes in modality research for neurodegenerative

diseases such as IMiDs, SIMs (in relation to TNF-α), and TPDs (in relation to

VISIT TO AEVIS BIO

Aevis Bio is located in the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology

in Daejeon. There, we met the CEO of Aevis Bio, Dong Seok Kim, who received both

his undergraduate and graduate education at Yonsei University in the Department of

Biochemistry. He greeted us as we entered the presentation room inside the building.

There, we had the chance to hear his story on founding Aevis Bio, including the

challenges of entrepreneurship and the joys of contributing to the well-being of rare

disease patients.
AEVIS BIO

During the presentation, we were guided through the major breakthroughs in

traumatic brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. Such a vignette made

clearer what biochemical approaches Aevis Bio is taking to break the disease cycle

and find solutions for neurodegenerative diseases. In addition to research, he

also gave advice for prospective entrepreneurs in the biotech industry, including

the importance of gaining funding to maintain a company. He mentioned that it is

important to not only understand how research is done, but also to collaborate with

financial partners and adequately distribute resources.

After the presentation, Doctor Kim gave us a tour of one of their labs in the

building. The lab was impressively organized and full of equipment that they used to

conduct requested experiments. As we toured the lab, he explained and described the

uses of some of the equipment. He also highlighted an important difference between

researching in academic and in industrial settings.

Q & A SESSION
IS IT POSSIBLE TO KNOW THE CAUSE BEHIND NEURODEGENERATIVE
DISEASES?

Neurodegenerative diseases proceed due to neuroinflammation, but that is not

the main cause behind the disease. Researchers do not know the exact cause of

neurodegenerative diseases yet, but one of the reasons why they have failed so far is

because it was based on an animal model. So, when we test it, we are not testing the

animal for the neurodegenerative disease itself, but it would just be testing animals

with a lot of amyloid beta. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the cause behind

these diseases.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DEVELOP BIOPHARMACEUTICALS? COULD

YOU PROVIDE A TIMELINE AS AN EXAMPLE?

The timeline for developing biopharmaceuticals takes longer than one may expect.

For instance, some projects can last up to 10 years. The reason for this is the

difficulties with accurate trials with patients with these neurological diseases.

Aevis Bio is facing the same complexities with their current project that focuses on

Parkinson’s disease.

AEVIS BIO CURRENTLY HAS TWO LABS. WHAT IS EACH LAB

RESPONSIBLE FOR?

The lab at KRIBB is responsible for conducting small experiments. The actual

development-related experiments are not done in Daejeon, but in other research

centers, where the labs are much larger in scale and have better facilities.

VISIT TO HANWHA SOLUTIONS

Our visit to Hanwha Solutions located in Daejeon, South Korea was exceptionally

interesting and informative. We were welcomed at the factory with big smiles and

coffee from our guides. They introduced to us the history of the company, core

values, and products. Not long after, we were given the opportunity to walk around

the facility. Unfortunately, the factory itself was off limits to those without

professional access. Instead, we visited the customer collaboration center with

interactive displays that showcased their products such as their polyethylene, PVC,

and solar panels, to name a few.

The highlight, however, was when we returned to the conference room to listen to

Youngjo Kim, a researcher at Hanwha Solutions in the Research & Development (R & D)

department. He shared with us his career history in Hanwha Solutions and gave us

advice on building a career path. His affable ambience grasped our attention; even

after the end of his presentation, we kept asking questions about his journey from

graduate school to Hanwha solutions. We were also given a brief description of the

company’s hiring process and the benefits of developing a career at Hanwha Solutions.

DOES A HIRING MANAGER AT A COMPANY LIKE HANWHA REMEMBER
SOMEONE’S RESUME WHEN SUBMITTED MORE THAN ONCE? IS THIS, IN
ANY CASE, LOOKED UPON NEGATIVELY?

Yes, the HR remembers the resume. However, the applicant will still be eligible for a

second review. In this case, we look for improvements or additional experiences that

will allow us to consider the applicant for an interview.

IS THERE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE NUMBER OF APPLICANTS

That’s not the case for Hanwha Solutions. We try to select a similar number of

applicants in the first and second half of the year.

38 | 39

CAN YOU SHARE A PAST MISTAKE OF YOURS THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED
A LESSON FROM?

Yes, When I submitted my resume to Hanwha Solutions the first time, I got rejected. I

didn’t even have a chance to get an interview. Thus, I edited my resume over and over

again until I submitted it again the following year and got accepted. However, for

the second time, I tried to get as much lab and job experiences as possible listed in

my resume with the necessary amount of detail.

OTHER THAN FOCUSING ON SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS, WHAT OTHER

AREAS OF EXPERTISE IS HANWHA SOLUTIONS RESEARCH INTERESTED
IN?

“Hanwha Solutions” as a company was founded quite recently by combining the various

sustainability sectors of the Hanwha group, and as such we focus on not only the

development of non-toxic plasticizers for PLA, but also the development of our

Q-Cells for more efficient solar panel usage.

INTRODUCTION
BINEX is a pharmaceutical company that mainly focuses on manufacturing and

distributing pharmaceutical drugs. The company was first founded in 2015 with the

intention of providing innovative and sustainable solutions to many healthcare

dilemmas in Korea. BINEX is well known for its self-developed drugs. By using

biological methods, BINEX has developed immunotherapy treatments that focus on

cancer.

The pharmaceutical company can be separated into two foci: CDMO pharmaceutical

services and research and development (R&D). The CDMO service entails partnerships

with other drug development companies to mass-produce and manufacture

pharmaceuticals. Drug research companies look to working with CDMOs as a way to

outsource their drugs. BINEX has also invested in R&D. In Osong and Songdo, they

focus on manufacturing vaccines and cancer drugs, while in Busan, they focus on

creating chemical drugs.

VISIT TO BINEX
Once we arrived at BINEX, we were in awe at the scale and size of the company. We

were greeted by Jung Heum Yeon, the director of BINEX. Mr. Yeon graduated with a

master’s degree in Biochemistry from Yonsei University. It was nice to see a fellow

Yonsei graduate working directly in the industry. Prior to taking a tour around the

factory, we had a session to understand the biopharmaceutical industry. We learned

how biopharmaceuticals are made, their advantages and disadvantages over conventional

pharmaceuticals, and the future of new modalities.

Industry Introduction by Jungheum Yeon,

Ph.D., Head of Bio Production

Explanations of industrial pipelines were very helpful in touring around the

factory. We put on workwear to look around the GMP factory, including the cell

bank, production, and purification bioreactors. We had a walk-through of the

overall upstream process and downstream process. We were able to take a look at

the microbial fermentation and animal cell culture systems designed to meet cGMP

and EU-GMP standards, which consist of devices and facilities (e.g. fermenters,

bioreactors, centrifuge, homogenizer) that can be applied to various production

methods. Automation of all processes maximizes safety and production efficiency, and

great care was taken as well to keep a sterile and stable environment for the safe

production of pharmaceuticals. It was interesting to look around facilities that

fostered Korea’s biotechnology industry to its current state.

42 | 43

Q & A SESSION
WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF WORKING WITH PROKARYOTIC CELLS FOR
DRUG DEVELOPMENT?

One of the biggest advantages is speed. Prokaryotes tend to reproduce and replicate

at a greater speed than eukaryotes. Another advantage is cost. When a company

undergoes a drug development process, the financial cost is a huge consideration.

Prokaryotic cells are cheaper to work with since they don’t require a nutrient medium

compared to their eukaryotic counterparts.

WHAT DETERMINES THE MODALITY, SUCH AS VIALS OR SYRINGES, OF

BIOPHARMACEUTICALS?

Biopharmaceuticals are inherently proteins, so they are sensitive to pH and

temperature. Therefore, it depends on the retail and injection process. BINEX does

not package products in the Osan factory but sends them to the Songdo factory for

packaging.

INTRODUCTION
Merck has 354 years of history. Friedrich Jacob Merck laid the foundation of today’s

Merck followed by Emanuel Merck’s initiation of industrial-scale of production. Merck

launched liquid crystal research(1904), Super-Q water purification system(1967),

and immunology research focused on cancer therapy(1987) and entered into the field

of targeted cancer therapies in 2003. It internationalized very early in the 19th

century by surviving two world wars and several economic crises and went public in

the nineties, with major acquisitions following. Starting in 2007, Merck acquired

several companies; Sereno(2007), Millipore(2010), AZ Electronic Materials(2014), and

Sigma-Aldrich(2015), Versum(2019).

The first documentable business contract was made by Merck in Korea in 1985 and the

Merck Ltd. Korea was established in 1989 for Healthcare, Lifescience, and Performace

Materials business. Nowadays, there is a total of 12 facilities of Merck in Korea;

six offices and six R&D centers with 1500 employees.

Company & Product Introduction by

Kyoung-yi Park, M Lab Operations Manager

Merck has three business units: electronics, life science, and healthcare.

The electronics product line comprises display solutions, surface solutions,

semiconductor solutions, and an integrated supply chain. The life science unit is

comprised of science & lab solutions, process solutions, and integrated supply

chain. Lastly, the healthcare unit includes general medicine, endocrinology,

oncology, fertility, and global supporting function systems. Other than these main

3 units, there is a set of departments in the Merck Group Function that includes

the departments of human resources, finance, procurement, and IT under the managing

director.

“We are curious minds dedicated to human progress”. Merck values curiosity the most.

The healthcare unit focuses mainly on the patients. In the life science unit, its

ultimate goal is to solve the toughest problems of Merck’s customers with cutting-

edge technologies. Last but not least, the electronics unit has the goal of advancing

digital living for the semiconductor & display industries.

VISIT TO MERCK M LAB

Among the 12 facilities of Merck Korea, we visited one of the R&D centers, the M Lab™

Collaboration Center in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. It is under the life science

unit. This center deals with the products of Millipore (preparation, separation,

filtration & testing products), SAFC (pharma & biopharma raw material solutions),

BioReliance (pharma & biopharma manufacturing & testing services), Sigma-Aldrich

(lab & production materials), Mili-Q(lab water solutions), and Supelco(analytical

products).

In this lab, we had a chance to see the facilities for customer support and

collaboration from pre-clinical through full-scale production in a non-GMP

environment. All the instruments located in the site were intricately organized to

demonstrate work and production efficiency to the customers. Also, this lab offers

“hands-on customer access” to Merck’s product portfolio, technical expertise, and

manufacturing simulations encompassing full end-to-end process development. The

interactive experience of the Songdo branch was highly engaging as anyone could

learn about Merck products. These interactive tools included a computer-touch pad

to customize research goals and subsequent experimental procedures as well as QR-

code engraved blocks leading to videos showing how to use different instruments.

This allows the customers to learn specifically about the products that Merck

provides in manufacturing/testing solutions. A well-tailored experience of the M

Lab™ Collaboration Center allows customers to thoroughly understand the instruments

and its usage for their own unique circumstances. Customers can closely collaborate

with Merck scientists and engineers to solve their challenges and accelerate the

development and production of new therapies. Although Merck’s branches are located

across the globe, the community is tightly knit as they continuously communicate with

one another. Therefore, most of the company’s mployees, regardless of position, must

frequently travel to different countries for workshops and training courses.

Kyoung-yi Park, M Lab Operations Manager

We also had an opportunity to learn how and when diverse kinds of filters are used,

to learn about the different sizes of cell culture activators, as well as about

disposable bags and purification devices. Those devices were all used for upstream

and downstream processes involved in manufacturing proteins for drug production.

In-depth explanations about the purposes of different filter models were very

insightful. Thanks to a detailed explanation from Kelly Park who oversaw our last

program of GCT, we were able to learn how scientists offer solutions to customers and

what kinds of expertise are needed to work in Merck’s M Lab™ Collaboration Center.

Q & A and Mentoring Session

MERCK

ALUMNI

We had a chance to meet our alumni Dakyoung Lee (BC ‘16) who was working in Merck.

She gave us a brief overview of her educational background and experiences as an

undergraduate. Interestingly, Dakyoung chose her last experience of being a tour

guide in the USA as the most memorable and also as a valuable experience even though

it wasn’t related to her major field of study. She said she had put this experience

in her CV when applying for Merck to demonstrate her process of self-development to

her employers.

Q & A SESSION
IS HAVING A SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND NECESSARY WHEN GETTING
INTO MERCK?

The recent pool of 552 recruitments from Jan 2021 to YTD 2022 show that about 84.6%

of the employees hired have scientific backgrounds. People from various departments,

including commercial, engineering & skilled trade, quality, R&D, regulatory affairs

& medial affairs, and manufacturing had scientific backgrounds. The departments of

finance & supply chain, procurement, IT, admin & communications, HR & legal, and

strategy & business development required no scientific background.

COMING INTO MERCK WITH A NON-SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND, DID YOU

FACE ANY ISSUES WHEN STARTING TO WORK HERE?

I’ve actually had some experience in the field of biotechnology while studying

electrical engineering as I took a module regarding biotechnology, but putting that

aside, Merck offers workshops to their employees on how to use the equipment and what

they do, and as such I was able to learn about the technology we use here better.

WHAT IS THE REASON YOU CHOSE MERCK?

I would pick the culture of Merck as the main reason why I chose the company.

Compared to the previous company I went to, Merck has a more horizontal culture among

the members. Also, Merck supports the pioneering spirits that discover new, novel

answers to the solutions. Also, Merck educates the newcomers for about 3-6 months to

make them fully understand the processes and solutions for the customers.

WHAT ARE SOME CAREER OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK ABROAD?

Whether it is a job transfer from the Korea branch to abroad or directly applying to

international branches, they are numerous opportunities to work in foreign locations.

I would suggest looking for job offerings in foreign locations directly.

MERCK

IF I PREFER TO STUDY SPECIFIC RESEARCH AREAS BUT NOT THE

GENERAL IDEAS OF HOW TO IMPROVE THE PROCESS OF CUSTOMERS’
PROJECTS, WILL I BE ABLE TO ADAPT TO THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
HERE?

If you prefer to study a specific research project rather than learning overall

process solutions and manuals of diverse devices, I recommend not choosing Merck.

Since we are focusing on “supporting” customers to make their products more

effective, you will not have the motivation and initiative required for the given

project.

COULD YOU DISCUSS SOME OF THE REQUIREMENTS OR WAYS THAT A

MERCK EMPLOYEE CAN TRANSFER TO ANOTHER DEPARTMENT?

The minimum amount of time you have to spend on the first job in Merck is around

2 years before you start applying for a different position. However, employees

can still build strong relationships with other colleagues outside of their own

department, at an early stage if they are interested in transferring to another

division.

The GCT 2022 program was not only informative but also valuable. This program helped
me envision a career path best suited for me. Whether it was learning about products
or what kind of steps are needed to apply for a job, I have been able to gain a much
better understanding of what to strive for in my future career. This experience was a
very much needed eye opener for me.

SEOYEON KIM
Thanks to the GCT 2022 summer program, I was able to learn specifically what
companies in bio industries are doing, how they differ from each other, and what
kinds of solutions and trends they are focusing. Also, it was a great chance to ask
about other departments in the company such as HR and marketing, in addition to the
R&D department. I recommend this program for sophomores and juniors since it helps
you plan for your future career path earlier.

JAEHOON LEE
Previously, GCT used to explore corporations that were not suitable for students
who majored in science & engineering. I would like to thank UIC for providing tour
opportunities for life science undergraduates. One of my hopes was to see facilities
in bioindustries because they are not found easily in school laboratories and could
only be viewed online through employment information sessions. I think it was a great
opportunity to see them with my own eyes and to hear how they work. Next time, I hope
the GCT tour to science and engineering companies will be conducted for LSBT and ISED
students.

YELIM HONG
Despite having only a semester left before I graduate, I have never stopped wondering
whether I made the right decision regarding my career. Through the 2022 GCT program,
I became confident that I would be delighted to pursue energy engineering for the
rest of my life. It is certainly not easy to gather information about your desired
career path, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to inquire to professionals
and mentors questions about my field of interest and my concerns as an undergraduate.

ZUNU AN
Touring these companies gave me a whole new perspective. You never know until you try
it out. Through GCT, my life goals became clearer. I want to thank everyone who took
part in organizing this year's global career tour and all the companies for providing
such an invaluable experience.
AFTERTHOUGHTS

JINYOUNG HONG
I have always been told that in order to contribute to the fields of life science
and biotechnology, going to graduate school is a must. Without much knowledge of the
possible career paths as a rising junior, I was given this precious opportunity of
the UIC Global Career Tour to broaden my perspective on different job opportunities
in this field. I was able to learn about cutting-edge research in biotechnologies
that are in the spotlight in relation to market trends. Most importantly, I have
gained some insights into practical information about biotechnology companies. It
was an invaluable experience listening to experts and leaders working in the exact
field I am interested in right now and seeing how the companies actually work by
taking a close look inside their workspaces. These are the aspects that could never
be fulfilled from the theoretical knowledge learned in normal college courses. I am
so grateful to the Dean and Professor Jang for the passion they have shown for the
program and the kindness they have shown to the crew members of GCT 2022. It was an
honor to be part of this insightful program, and it was the best choice I have made
this summer.

The 2022 GCT program allowed me to gain great insights into industrial-biology
fields. From marketing to R&D research, I was able to gain a holistic understanding
of what’s happening in real world industries. By meeting professionals and seeing
what they do in day to day life, I was able to better grasp which type of career path
I want to pursue after my undergraduate career. This program was not only valuable in
gaining career knowledge but also served as a steppingstone in understanding myself
and in helping me shape my ideal career.

YUJIN KONG
First I would like to thank Professor Jang for planning such an informative tour and
supervising us throughout the Global Career Tour. Through GCT I was able to see what
‘having a job’ looks like. I appreciated the honest opinions yet informative lectures
/ Q&A sessions from each company. I recommend GCT to many of the undergraduates who
are struggling to figure out what they should do after they graduate.

SIWON LEE
Being in the science field, it is not easy to gain experience in the industry as
an undergraduate. Internships are mostly confined to school laboratories and R&D
positions at companies require the minimum of a master’s degree. Hence, this field
and industry had always seemed uncertain and vague to me. However, GCT provided
the opportunity for direct conversations with current employees and detailed tours
of workspaces, which answered many of my questions and helped me paint a clearer
picture. I am grateful and proud to have been a part of GCT 2022, and hope to retain
the lessons learned while cherishing the memories made.

JUNSEO CHOI
The Global Career Tour was a peek into what my future would possibly look like. The
diverse companies that we visited each provided different pathways to the future and
possible plans for my career. I was looking forward to GCT since I was a freshman,
but due to the pandemic crisis, the program was not available for the last two years.
It was my honor to be one of the participants of GCT 2022, and I am grateful to the
professors, companies, and crew members of GCT 2022.
AFTERTHOUGHTS

HYUNGJIN YOON
When I entered college, I had absolutely no idea nor felt the need to think about my
career choices. Rather, I spent time having fun during my first year in college. I
just had a vague idea of working in a field related to “bio-stuff”. The thought “What
can I offer to the job market? How am I going to survive?” kicked in only after I
learned that a kid in his early 20s doesn’t really have much to bring to the table.
After my discharge from the military, I decided to take whatever opportunities I had
to explore different career options rather than being forced into accepting a job
that I didn't really want.

In this context, GCT this year was an excellent experience. GCT 2022 was the all-
inone experience for students studying bioengineering and related fields. From
research institutes to industry giants like ThermoFisher Scientific, the career tour
showed that various career opportunities were open to us. What I think was the best
part of GCT was that it actually helped students have a more realistic understanding
of the biomedical industry. All of us have some kind of idea of how the pharma
industry works but I doubt someone already had an understanding of how many layers
and levels of jobs exist and how different they are related to each other. With real
life advice from people who do the actual work, I was able to better understand the
biomedical industry and the nature of the job market as well.

I believe trying to find the right place for you without seeing the whole picture is
nearly impossible. Before you use a compass, first find a map. If you have similar
concerns or thoughts about career opportunities, I strongly recommend you join this
program.

GAYATRI PATEL
The opportunity to apply for GCT 2022 arrived at the most crucial time during my
undergraduate career. After my junior year, I started to notice that there wasn’t
much time left until the end of my time at UIC. This was when I started my search for
possible career paths for my future and to explore the best options that would be a
good fit for me. During this process, I came across the announcement for GCT. When
I noticed the list of bio-related companies in the itinerary for GCT 2022, I wasted
no time applying for the program. It was the first offline UIC event I participated
in since the beginning of the pandemic. I had a great experience throughout the
tour with all the students and great professors who accompanied us. I was pleasantly
surprised to realize that the representatives in every one of our visits were
extremely eager to help the students in any way possible. This tour was an invaluable
experience to me as I had the opportunity to meet with professionals working in
different departments. I believe that all the information relayed by the companies
will be of great help as I start to navigate the next chapter of my career.
56 | 57

SEORIN KANG
Ever since I entered college, the only classes I’ve ever experienced were online
classes. The pandemic not only made it hard for me and my colleagues to participate
in lab classes, but it also blocked me from engaging in many different activities
related to the field of science and technology. As a rising junior, I started
thinking about what kind of jobs I could do in the future, and the career paths I
could take. Upon hearing about an event called ‘Global Career Tour’, I felt like
this could be a great opportunity for me to get an overview of the biopharmaceutical
and chemical industry. After experiencing the tour, I learned various aspects
of companies which weren’t apparent before. I also realized that there are a lot
of people that work in sales and marketing rather than research despite their
undergraduate degree. This made me gain insight in the various pathways I could take
in the future. GCT was a truly memorable experience, and I hope this meaningful event
will continue to help students next year as well.

SEIN KIM
I’ve always searched for opportunities to gain experience or knowledge regarding the
science industry. With an industry that is only open to those with a high level of
education, there is only so much you can do as a college student to understand it.
When I saw that this year’s GCT program was catered to science majors, I saw it as
a rare and highly valuable opportunity. Through the career tour, I was able to not
only learn about what the industry has to offer, but also how diverse careers in this
industry can actually be. Listening to the personal career paths of those in esteemed
company positions was inspiring and insightful. GCT has given me information that I
could not find elsewhere. I hope it continues to help students with their careers in
the future.

HAMERENOAH TESEGA
It was a very insightful program! Before GCT my perspective on the Bio Industry was
very narrow and I was certain that I would be pursuing a future career in Academia
instead of joining the industry. During the three-day tour to various Bio Companies,
I learned about the key role played by the industry, from large to small scale, in
improving people’s lives. Most of the companies we visited play a vital role in
therapeutics from drug development to the production of monoclonal antibodies. For so
long I thought that Bio-Industries were solely profit-oriented, but to my surprise, I
have learned that many are founded on the core purpose of helping people. The overall
experience has motivated me to research more on bio-industries and diversify my
future career plan.

JINHO HONG
Coming to Yonsei, I was unsure of my career path and what I could achieve by
graduating with a degree in energy and environmental science engineering. Having
taken part in this year's Global Career Tour program, I was able to learn about
various biochemical fields of engineering, as well as what working at an energy
solutions company (Hanwha) entails, and what industry-leading research institutes
and companies do to make the world a better place. As a sophomore going into the
program, I was intrigued by the level of intricate technology they used, and found
the conversations I had with representatives from each of the companies to be quite
insightful. If there was another such opportunity, I would definitely participate
again. I would also like to thank the professors and everyone who came on the trip
with us for all their hard work!
