BENAVIDES LECTURE GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. What are your thoughts and concerns about AI in nursing?

I am concerned as to what the implications of AI will have on the delivery of care to our
patients. Nursing has always been about the therapeutic use of self in order to care for
another and that intimacy and personality is threatened by artificial intelligence. Despite
this, with regards to patient outcomes and efficiency, it’s obvious that the practice
benefits from AI. I guess it all comes down to properly using this tool and knowing what
our boundaries are when incorporating this into our work.

2. How can we harness its potential while ensuring ethical and responsible
implementation for the benefit of patients and nurses alike?

Too much of anything isn’t good and that phrase still applies to the use of AI, not limited
to the nursing profession alone. Just because you can, does not mean you should,
which applies to the vast capabilities within AI. We can responsibly wield this tool by
setting boundaries on how it’s used. Going back to the basics and reviewing the very
core and essence of nursing may ground us as to what an AI can and cannot do as
compared to an actual human nurse. It cannot entirely mimic the human experience, nor
can it empathize and relate to a patient the way we can. We must also use AI with the
patient’s interests in mind and not for the sake of personal gain or convenience.
