E. NETIQUETTE
The Dos of Online Education
Netiquette is also known as internet etiquette. This is the socially acceptable behavior while
transacting/engaging with each other on the internet. You will be required to attend online
meetings and online classes and just like there are rules that govern our conduct on face-to- face
interactions, the online environment dictates that we observe certain norms as a way of ensuring
that everyone feels comfortable engaging in the virtual space.

Best practice dictates the following:

i. Plan in advance and identify a serene place where you will be seated for the online
session
ii. Set up and initiate the joining of the online session at least 15 minutes before so as to
check on your connection
iii. You are communicating to and with other people. In everything you do, be empathetic
iv. In case of interpersonal conflicts or where you have a complaint with regards to
colleagues’ online conduct, notify the meeting host
v. Upload an official photograph on your profile for ease of identification

a) As soon as you join an online meeting:

i. Ensure that you mute your mic to minimize noise to all the participants
ii. If not in an official space, turn off your video always (you can turn on-upon
request)
iii. Use the chat box provided to post any questions, queries and comments. These
will always be addressed before the end of the session
iv. Await to be allowed to unmute your mic and ask a question
v. Refrain from taking over the presentation.
Do not click on the ‘Present now’ icon
b) While speaking or writing:
i. Use the official language of communication
ii. Be kind and professional
iii. Maintain a respectful tone
iv. Respect people’s diversity
v. Keep your comments simple and short
To succeed in an Online Course:
1. For this unit, you are required to spend at least 3 hours every week to study and engage in
teaching and learning activities that have been uploaded. Depending on varying factors,
you can spend more or less time to cover the week activities.
2. Observe all deadlines for all teaching and learning activities as provided for by the course
facilitator and the academic calendar.
3. It is our expectation that all teaching and learning activities will be undertaken by you
individually except where instructed otherwise.
4. An online student is self-paced. Enjoy the flexibility while ensuring that all the schedule
provided is adhered to.
5. Make reference to the netiquette provided above so that proper communication standards
and professionalism are maintained as you interact with your facilitator and colleagues
online.
6. Use the following contacts for the Support System:
